The “what engine and parts” question is a good one. I’m going to answer the initial question with my opinion and few people are going to like it, but I’ve had the best of luck getting NOS parts from eBay….if you are patient and don’t need to do the repair or overhaul immediately.
NAPA used to have good replacement parts, but I noticed the fuel pumps from them lately are now made overseas.

My favorite scrap yard in N. Idaho has a bay plumb full of old 4 cylinder Wisconsins (and others) if you are looking for salvage parts. steve

The engine is a VF4D. In the near future, I am planning on overhauling it, so I am sure that would require a comp. gasket set, bearings etc. etc..

Group I'm on is Wisconsin Air Cooled Engines. Probably some other too.

Many parts I found on ebay. Pistons I sourced locally from full service auto parts store.
I think you can run long or short skirt pistons in odd fire. Even fire requires short skirt I am fairly sure.
I had babbit rods so replaced them with shell bearing type. Babbit works, I just prefer shell bearings.

mr, They are called Hern's Iron Works. They are just off Atlas, in Coeur d'Alene. They used to be a foundry, but now only recycle scrap iron. steve
