Won't crank over

Ok working on a Farmall h today and was cranking it over to try and start and the out of know where it decided to stop cranking. Kept trying to hit the starter button but nothing it will not make and noise or movement. I know battery is good and all cables are hooked up. Could it be the ignition switch or the push button?

How do you know the battery is OK? This sounds like a weak battery that decided to die after draining the last few amps it contained. I've been there many times and have been fooled by a multimeter, too. Take the battery to the store and have them load test it. I think you'll be purchasing a new battery.

Starter could be locked up. Loosen the 2-3 bolts holding the starter to the clutch housing about 4-6 turns and try to wiggle the starter. If you hear the Bendix snap back it was stuck in the ring gear teeth on the flywheel.

I've never understood the shotgun approach to diagnosing electrical issues. Get a VOM meter and check continuity from connection to connection. Get the battery tested. Most of the issues I have had in that area trace back to a bad ground or dirty connection.

If yours has the rod going to the little lever that pushes the button that is mounted on top of the starter it might be that the contacts on top of the starter and the one on the button might not be making contact. After so many times of making contact they get to the point where enough material has been arced away that they quit touching when the button is depressed

If yours has the remote push button check the posts for voltage on output post while pushing the button down. Ignition switch would have no bearing on your starter turning over.

it is hard to help, when we do not know what you are looking at. there are several variations. can you post picture of starter?

i didn't have the time to try it again after I took it out but the starter is just a plain Ol H start doesn't have the pull lever like the super a does.

Brand new battery means nothing since many can be bad right off the shelve. Time to check all connections and make sure they are clean tight and bright. As for checking the starter you can pull it off and with anotehr battery and jumper cables hook it up and see if it spins over or pull it and take it to an auto parts store and they will check it for free

Sounds like a bad ground. make the positive side of the battery is connected as close to starter as possible. Clean battery cables AGAIN. Negative side to the starter switch on the light post. Again clean all those connections to shiny bright. Give the starter button a little twist when pushing down hard & fast.

If none of this works it's time to remake both battery cables out of double ought (00) muti strand all copper cable, ( Used welding cable will also work) purchase new ends, solder them on completely, cover all connections with shrink wrap.

If the battery is six volt, take it out of the tractor sit it up on a wooden crate or box. Let it charge overnight on a trickle charger.

Make sure the ground is directly bolted right to the starter mount bolt. That eliminates all the resistance and rust trying to conduct electricity through the rust of all the frame joints. Made a huge difference on my H, it went from just growling-growling to WHAM!

The battery connection from the cable lug to the internal wiring in these starters is a soldered connection. If you are pulling hard on it, it could over heat and come loose. I have had it happen a couple of times.

why not pull the starter and get it refreshed that way you know its in shape then you can follow up with new cables ect.

(quoted from post at 11:42:23 11/08/15) The battery connection from the cable lug to the internal wiring in these starters is a soldered connection. If you are pulling hard on it, it could over heat and come loose. I have had it happen a couple of times.

They also break off from improper tightening.

As someone said above, get a meter and see where the trouble is.
