Won't crank

Had my 8N sold today, but when I delivered it, it would not crank. I cleaned all the connections on the battery and solinoind. used jumper cables from tractor battery to ground on solinoind and the big lug on solinoind. It started right up. replaced solinoid and it still won't crank unless I use jumper cables.

Need help fast. If I can get it going I think I can still sell it to the buyer.

Thanks,

Check the battery (tip # 49)

Check the cables.

Remove the cables from the battery & clean the connections.

Remove the battery cable from the tractor chassis & clean the connection.

if it cranks with the interlock switch with jumpers in place to bypass battery strap to chassis, and hot lead to solenoid, you know you have a connection or cable problem.

I think it is the interlock switch. When checking for continuity from interlock switch to neg cable I get nothing most of the time. Meters will beep on occasion, but not all the time. Have checked it with two different meters.

How do you go about changing one of those rascals?

I"d like to be sure I'm understanding what you're saying here when you say "continuity from interlock switch to neg cable". I want to assume you mean the ground cable that is attached to the postive terminal on the battery, assuming its a 6 volt positive ground system. (lot of assumptions here)
Are you measuring to the case of the switch, or to the terminal while pushing the switch?
You should have continuity to the case of the switch all the time, and to the terminal when you push the switch. If you don't have continuity to the case, you may have a bad cable connection, or a loose switch.
If that's good and you don't have continuity to the terminal, then maybe a switch, or at least a dirty switch.
I just changed the switch on one of mine. I had to pull the cover off the tranny and flip it over to get to the bottom of the switch.
There was a nut on the bottom with a star washer. One tab of the star washer was bent up to keep the nut from coming loose and dropping into the tranny.
Cleaned the surfaces, put the new switch in, tighten it down, bent the locking tab back up, put it back on with a new gasket and I was good.

It's the interlock switch. When it won't crank I can jump a wire from the interlock terminal and touch it to ground on the battery and she cranks!

Thanks for all the replies!
