Won't start but not starter problem

I have a 2000 LS55 New Holland with a CVS20 Kohler engine (343 hrs). Its driving me nuts because for months I thought I had a battery or starter problem. When I go to start it I just hear click...like the battery is dead. I replaced the battery but didn't help. Then mysteriously it would start for a few weeks. Now it acted up again so I removed the starter and had it tested (its OK). The dealer says it must be one of the safety devices such as in the seat or clutch. Can someone tell me where to look if they have gone through this. Almost went out and bought a used Deere I was so frustrated today but then it started. Would a bad ignition switch cause this? Thanks.

Not familiar with your engine, but could it be solinoid .Try using a jumper wire withaligator clips on each end to jump solinoid and other safety switches to find fault

The starter solonid draws about 17 amps, and the safty circuit has any resistance in it they wont work. Make sure the transimssion is in neutral and use a jumper wire to jump form the starter batt (big) post to the solonid. If that startes it you can rig a 12 volt relay and still have all the safty switches work, the relay coil draws les than 2 amps. Use the start wire form the switch to energise the relay.

Due to the fact that you hear a click when you turn ign sw to start indicates safety circuit & ign sw working, most probable cause of problem ,contacts in sol going bad, mech problem in sol & plunger for contacts sticking or a shorted coil, don't know which style starter you have on eng, kohler used 2 on cv20,one use's a remote mounted sol other has sol mounted starter(ala gm style)if remote mounted try repaceing sol,if mounted on starter, contacts in same may be going bad OR plunger in sol that operates starter drive binding/sticking in sol coil body due to dirt, rust, wear, loose screws or shorted coil(if plunger sticking/binding starter motor should still run,but drive won't engage if coil/contacts good ),when problem happens again, connect a voltmeter or 12v test light to sol coil screw(s) & confirm 12v to same,if you have voltage when ign sw turned to start, problem inside sol.

Does it have a starter solenoid? You need to make sure all battery connections are clean and tight. If it has a solenoid you need to use a volt meter to see if battery voltage is getting to the terminal on your solenoid when you're making a start either with a key or push button.
You will need a helper and be careful with your hands around the starter or flywheel teeth. If you're getting voltage when trying to crank the engine it's probably the solenoid that's defective. Hal

I had this type problem with my DX33 Case IH tractor. I installed a relay and and have not had any further problems. I would suggest you go to web site tractorbynet.com and search the new holland forum for case dx33 starting problems. Lots of info on this subject.
