won't start when hot

Starts easily when cold...won't start when hot. Could it be related to smoking upon acceleration, runnign too rich? Can find Dell's carb adjust instructions in the archive. Any help appreciated.

This help? Dell"s carb. adjustment instructions:I set the down-pointing mainjet to 1-12 turns and LEAVITT!!! then adjust the side-pointing idlemix for maximum idle rpms, NOT SMOOTHEST idle, MAX idle rpms. I then set the behind the carb idle-speed screw for SLOOOooow 400rpms idle. (ennythang under 500rpms is good) I do the idlemix adjust dance at least 3-times. Remember the side-pointing idlemix is BASSACKWARDS; out for lean, IN for ENRICH. My idlemix usually ends up about 38 turn. Yours will be different...........Dell

Next time it is hot and won't start, check the spark. Use an old, but good, spark plug gapped to 3/16 or even 1/4". Attach it to one of your wires and ground it against the head(a clean paint free spot)..TRACTOR IN NEUTRAL, and key on, turn the engine over with the starter..Strong Blue, NOT YELLOW, spark should jump the 3/16 gap on the test plug..Do this and report back Hope this helps

Sometimes if mine doesn't seem to want to start right off, especially when hot, I will take the end of my pocket knife and short the resistor terminals together, and it will usually fire right up.

I haven't had to do that much (or maybe none) since I replaced the resistor.

Dell says...

The resistor is like a light bulb, it is either good or bad.

I don't think so, I think they can get burned, rusted, corroded, or just bad connections on the crimped ends.

Sounds like border line spark - when the ballast resistor is hot, it increases resistance, then decreases when cooled off. Could be Dell's weak sister ignition switch as well. Try jumping the battery to the coil when hot and see what gives.
If you have to wait more than a few minutes for it to cool off (like an hour or so), then it's likely the coil going bad.
