Wood chipper

I'm thinking of getting one also. I think I want one that has a compression drum that pulls the brush in. But it needs to be a small one, my tractor is only about 30hp.

You should check the horsepower requirement of the chipper you're considering. Chippers take a fair amount of power.

I have a Valby pto driven, hydraulic feed
unit. It will handle 6" easily. I love it.
I bought it through HUD-Son in NY. I've
used it for years. I finally removed the
knives but they weren't full or chipped. I
have run it of a JD 1020 with 36 hp but
prefer to run it off the 55 hp JD.

Picked up a used bearcat one years ago at a good price. It does fine but would be better if it had some sort of power feeder. Works better on fresher stuff. Old dry wood can get tougher to get it to go through and sometimes will just bounce around in the infeed chute. It does not have a discharge chute either so you have to keep raking the chips away from the bottom. Keeping the knives sharp is pretty important too.

I have one from Northern tool I have had for 10 yrs or more it works ok on my 8N with plenty of power but much better on my 1710 due to the live Hydraulics. It is capable of 4" dia. but I burn anything over 2" for heat. I have tried larger stuff and it will take it but it needs to be fairly straight, it has a feed drum to pull the wood in and it works just fine.

I have a Wood Max WM8H, hydraulic feed
chipper. Run it on my Ford 1710. Great
machine. The manufacturer verified that
my tractor would lift the chipper (900+ #)
and said with the HP of the 1710, I could
chip up to 7" soft wood at full feed
speed. If it starts to bog down, reverse
the feed then adjust feed speed lower. I
am very pleased with the build quality and operation.

Be sure that it is self feeding!!! My friend has one that is simply a round plate with one knife on the face. It is supposed to take up to five inch but it will take it only if there are no side branches. so you have to remove all small branches over 3/8 inch. It is useless!!

I've had a Bearcat 3 point chipper with hydraulic feed for about 12 years. Run it on a JD 630 2 cylinder, perfect combination. Found it used on CL. Couldn't get along without it.

(quoted from post at 02:59:26 05/23/20) Ellis,
was it self feeding? I've been looking at Wallenstein & don't want to buy a new piece of junk.

Mke

Wallenstein evidently has a very good reputation as there are dozens of chinese made "brands" being sold.
And they are all built to look just like a wally, even using the same model numbers.
I have seen them on CL advertised as wallys. Some of the sellers are very adamant about them being wallys until you ask for their dealer name so you can call wally to confirm they are a legit wally dealer.

I?m in the same place and I have been looking. A friend has a
Woodmaxx he likes. I am more impressed with the Woodland
Mills. My brother has aWoodland Mills stump grinder and
likes it very much.

For what it?s worth.

Good Luck.
