Woods Finish PTO shaft

Running the 9N with a Woods rear finish
mower, guess I should have adjusted my
upper bar to be shorter so it wore and
broke, now I have to replace it. What
length PTO shaft should I get for this,
figured I'd just get a new shaft. I'm
running the ORC as I should be.

Your nomenclature has me very confused? Your PTO shaft is in the tractor. Are you talking about the mowers drive shaft?

The upper bar is your top link if that is what you are referring to. Pictures would sure help.

An off the shelf one might work however, most times one ends up having to buy a shaft assembly that is longer than needed and cut it down to the correct length.

Here is a link to a video (one of many) on how to size an for a PTO shaft. You will need to make the basic measurement of length to purchase a shaft about the right length, long enough, but not too short, to start with.

I used to own a Woods RM600 finish mower. I had similar problem using the ORC. I made some new brackets for the mower to set it back 3 more than the original mounts. I just had to be sure not to pick it up too high or the PTO shaft would pull apart.

You do Not need to use an ORC on a finish mower.

Shortening your top link shouldn't change anything that would have prevented your problem. As already stated need to be clearer on what parts you mean. It sounds like your equipment's drive shaft that slides together was never shortened to the proper length for your tractor. You don't need an ORC to operate a finish mower usually but on an N you might have the old style PTO and your ORC is your adapter which is how my tractor is.

I don't know about the Woods finish mowers but, I have a Woods M5 brush mower. This mower has a square shaft coming from the gear box. It has an outer shaft with a square female end that slides over that square shaft so the outer shaft can slide on the square shaft if it needs to.

The problem with cutting that outer shaft is that the female end of it only has that square opening on about 5 inches of it. The part in the pic below is what is welded into that outer shaft. If you cut too much off the mower end you will be left with no square end on that outer shaft.

I agree but I had it on for my brush hog and it was more of a pain to take it off and put it on than making some brackets.
