Front or side mount distributor?
If front, around 2.2 to 2.5V points closed.
If side mount/round coil, around 5 to 6V points closed.

You need to make sure your points are open when making that test. With the points open you should have battery voltage.

Actually, taking two voltage readings, one with the points "open" and another with them closed would provide a much better "picture" of what's going on.

With the points open you should read the same voltage as you read at the battery. With them closed you should read a lot lower
