worn dowel pin

(quoted from post at 02:02:04 01/02/11) could someone tell me where I can get a replacement dowel pin for the cam follower on my 3 point lift.

I can't answer your question but to add to it , I am wondering what the solid end of a drill bit cut to length would do ? I have hundreds of them . Assuming you could get a tight enough fit .

I am assuming also that the pin is harder than the cast iron cam . The few I have seen seemed to be short and wore half of the cam down . A longer pin might last longer ? (like 60 years is short)

Harry.......dowl pin, p/n: 73298-S8, 5/16x7/8. NLA per Ford/New Holland parts.

Surprizingly enuff, you can gitt a hardened sheetmetal split roll pin (5/16x1) at yer common hardware store that will fit and work well and last longer. excess length is NOT a problem. Simple, eh? .......Dell

Ken,I would probably skip the drill bit. The shank of most drill bits are very soft.
I like Dell's roll pin idea.

agree with Dell......those rollpins
are super tough.
(I have been defeated a few times, on pounding/drilling out
steering wheel rollpins on Wheel Horse RJ's and Suburbans)

I got mine from Zane Sherman

I removed mine after grinding off flat with my press and sharpened end of new one, then pressed it in per his instructions. this guy has this whole hyd system down pat. His instuction books are worth the weight in gold!

You can get them from Zane Sherman, CNH (I show p/n 374072-S) or nnalert's. A 5/16" X 1" dowel pin will work but is .003 larger in diameter and may have to be ground down a bit in order to install it. Or if some PO already put a dowel pin in there & the hole is oversized, no grinding will be needed.

Dell, I am wondering if when the roll pin wears through the first layer will it then turn into a cutting tool and eat away at the cam???? I would rather recommend a 5/16 X 1 dowel pin. I know the standard dowel pin is .003 larger in diameter but that can be lived with. I always grind off a small amount of the part that will ride on the cam to make it easier to start and you can also put the pin in a drill press and turn it with a file pressed on it to cut it down to less than .003 oversize as measured with a micrometer but the .003 will work without any modification and sometimes it is better if the hole is wallowed out some in the link where it goes.

I always buy cam follower pins from CNH. At nearly $5.00, it's a bit pricey but I will never again change any of them.

I had my top cover off ('47 8N) on a Sunday afternoon at our summer cottage, pin was worn about 1/4 way through, no stores open. Grabbed the pin with vice grips & turned it 180 degrees. Probably should have waited & replaced it but it will outlast me.

Where can I find dowel pins. I have the drill press. The wear thru of a split pin damaging the cam would not be what I care for.

NAPA for sure and possibly any other auto parts store. A dowel pin is a common item in the automotive industry to ensure correct alignment between cylinder heads/blocks, engine to transmissions etc.....

No luck at NAPA, had to go to engine re-build Co. I honed 5/16 dowel down to 1/1000 over and pressed it in. Nice and tight.
