My BIL and wife were here a few days ago from Alberta (not farm people), so I thought it would be a good time to run 'Old John', my JD 60. Been sitting for over 2 months and it took 2 'rhumpa's' before it started. Should I be worried ? Just kidding, the BIL loved the thing ! ;^0

I sold my 630 this spring and I do miss it but it did not get enough use.I like to idle it on the road with a wagon then open it up and listen to it bark. Just sold a good 530 as well. You can't keep them all. Tom

My Dad was never real mechanical and he never liked nor got along well with our hand start mid series (early styled) A! He liked the '51 gas B soooo much better he just never "got along well" with the A. I however have always gotten along very well with it! I believe to this day his biggest problem was that he never had a good feel for how to use a choke. Didn't matter if it was on a Ford Pickup, a 112 lawn tractor or a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine. He never had a feel for a choke! The '51 gas B is quite forgiving of over choking where the A is NOT AT ALL forgiving! Choke a hand start A wrong & you WILL pay! Anyhow, though he did not like the tractor he always enjoyed listening to it when I would start it. I jokingly called the compression reliefs the hisser valves. A week before he died we laughed & talked of how it sounded when "hand cranking the A". As long as I was cranking it, it was music to his ears!

Its great how an old piece of machinery can create good family memories...even when they are actin up.

Our old 430 has never been split or overhauled, tho it needs it now. Everytime I hear it pull down and get serious going up a hill I think about it doing that when I was a kid with my Dad, Grandad, and Great Grandad ( who bought it new) pulling a big wagon load of tobacco up to house at the barn. Funny, Im never tired or hot in those memories.
