Is this a b*stard tractor? something someone "fixed" up? Is it worth $4000?
Model is 41014C. Loader is Ford. 38" rears.

Thanks.

The model number suggests that you have a 4000 All Purpose, diesel, independant PTO with an 8 speed crash box.
Clearly you have a Row Crop.
Have you taken the numbers from the underside of the hood or the transmission? Hoods are easy to change. Transmissions are more involved, but if someone had a transmission failure and replaced it with a salvage unit, or tossed an S-O-S then you would end up with these numbers.
So... If you have a 3 cylinder engine then it's a 4000, and if it's a 4 cylinder engine it's a 5000. It's hard for me to tell the length of the hood from the pictures.
Regardless, I'd say it's a tactor consistent with the row crops of the time.
Price seems OKish. IT looks a bit rough in the front, but that shouldn't be too big of a concern IF the rest of it is mechanically sound...

Rod, numbers were taken from the transmission and the engine is 3 cylinder. Everything is supposed to work, but the nose is kinda rough. That's an easy fix. Is $4K too much?

- b*stard tractor -

No I wouldn't say that. I would make a guess that it had a SOS trans that was replaced with an 8 speed trans. A BIG improvement in value.
I like the looks of a row crop. Lots of ground clearence and the 38" tires give it better traction.
$4000 is OK if there is no problems. Even better with the loader.
Only you can tell if it is in good condition. Things to look at;
Front axel wear. Spindle bushings. Wheel bearings. King pin bushings. That loader can wear out the front end parts.
Tires - Rears look good, are they? Fronts?
Road speed? With the change of trany does it go down the road OK.
Fluids - Antifreeze too. Is that loader plumbed into the tractor Hydraulics?
Location is a big part of price too.
Some others may have more to add to the list.

If it's in good shape I'd say that's fair for here. I'd check the front axle over pretty well, steering, etc. I'd want the engine to fire on the first crack in this weather when it's first started for the day and I'd want to know how much oil it burns. If it was burning any or the least bit hard to start then I'd be suspect of it and price it accordingly.
Beyond that the RC setup is not something I'd care for, but I'm used to the 4000 AP.
For what it's worth I'd suspect that this tractor had a transmission failure rather than an S-O-S unless they were fussy about removing the S-O-S shifter and such... It's hard to say. Ask questions of the seller.
I'd also look around for what else is available in the area in terms of other tractors and newer Ford's of that range like a 4600 or 4610.
I know many will say that 4 grand is cheap for a 4000, but the way I look at it is that I can buy a 4610 or 4630 similarly equipped for 7-9 grand here and you have a far superiour steering system and hydraulic system, moreso on the 30 series along with syncro transmission options and FWD. Even a 4630 FWD with an 8x8 syncro transmission and Q/T loader is a 10 grand tractor here... so I'd want a fair discount on a 4000 because it's functionally a LOT less tractor to me. That might not matter to you, so perhaps this one will do what you want.

Newest it could be is '73. 3-cyl. 4000 rowcrops were built from '65 to '73. They were dropped when the 7000 RC was introduced. What I can see of the sheetmetal suggests this is a '65 to early '68 model.

I would also consider what you want to do with it. In my experience, the row crop tractors if they are fitted with a loader at a later time in life don't always work well as a loader tractor. Does the bucket rest on the ground flat? Some don't touch the ground, or have been hacked to make them work. As all others have said, if the tractor is mechanically competent, $4k doesn't scare me, but once you get to that level, for a little more, there are a lot of choices.
