In that first picture you can see farmer tilled around the jog. So are you saying first earthquake, then snow and cold, then sun and warm to dry field, then tillage, then picture? I do believe they had killing earthquake. I just don't believe this is a picture from it.

I did a search using Tineye and could not find anything that suggests they were from any earlier quake. They may be genuine, or a photoshop job. The aerial view which also shows an intact highway seems odd, though.

Those pics may or may not be real, but there are plenty that are unquestionably real and unbelievably bad. 20,000+ dead and counting, most in pancaked inadequately reinforced concrete buildings.

It seems there have been real issues in ensuring enforcement of newer building codes that were updated after previous earthquake disasters. Recently built buildings that claimed to be built to code crumbled where they would have been expected to be standing with modest damage.

Since it's winter, the new disaster unfolding is the lack of shelter/heat/water/food/medicine for the survivors. It seems some is starting to trickle in, but not nearly fast enough and days later than desperately needed.

If an earthquake happened here, how many days would you sit around? Would you be waiting for the next or if you had a crop to put in would you plant as planned. And if it was tilled prior the furrows would move the same as the road, which it could have. the picture certainly isn't that clear to make a determination from 10,000 miles away. Life does go on.

Thanks warbaby. That overhead shows it as a real deal to me of the rail tracks. The flatter ground level pic of those tracks is taken just perfectly to cover up the actual crack in the ground, and why it appears to be a fake to me.

Im still puzzled about the road picture as that looks all settled and regrown.

Im not all worried about these two pictures, I just find them interesting, and like to see my thought process figure out the reality from the clues in the pictures.

Clearly there was a great tragedy in that region with great losses and a terrible thing.

Im not sure why some of you are condemning those that like to puzzle out a mystery as to how these pictures can look the way they do, if they are real or not.

One thing is not the same as the other, it is not either or.

Curious minds like to puzzle about things like this, why are you trying to condemn curiosity and logic and trying to learn and understand? I feel bad for you who just accept things without ever questioning anything. Shoe is on the other foot.

Anyhow, I enjoyed this thread and the opportunity to think and grow because of it. Despite a few negative voices.

Enjoy life, think for yourselves, be curious, question things, learn. The earthquake shows how fragile life can be, live it while you can.

Rail tracks are such a neat thing, they need to give some but they have to keep the 2 rails perfectly parallel and distance from each other, as they flex up and down or side to side.

That is a such a telling picture of the quake line. The ground in front sheared a little over three feet to the right as it shoved away from us. If you look at the pic nearly flat you can sight down the tracks and see they moved almost but not quite the width of the tracks.

If we could bother to figure out the angle of the flat line to the tracks we could figure out how far the 2 sides moved against each other.

That is some huge movement of a massive amount of dirt!

The rail track was very well built, it did exactly what it is engineered to do. Keep the 2 rails parallel no matter what. As the rail was compressed together it snaked, shoved the ties around and snaked into an S curve to use up the extra track. But the ties survived all that and continued to hold the tracks parallel!

Amazing.

Didn't you guys see it. The reason there is no visible damage to the highway next to the track in Warbabies picture is because the ditch was an expansion joint didn't you guys see the seem from the road to the tracks. This allowed the fault to go along the ditch instead of cross the road. Now if you believe that I have ocean front property in MT for you.
