Where exactly does water leak from when the water pump starts going out?

Don't know SPECIFICALLY what machine you are talking about, but most engine waterpumps have a "weep hole" at the bottom of the "neck" that contains the shaft and bearings. When the seal fails, water trickles out the weep hole, typically just at the back of the pulley.

Here's ONE example, on a car waterpump:

Yep as Bob says and on your WD45 it has one and if I remember right it is on the under side of the pump and sits below the fan shaft and back about an inch or so from the fan hub
