yanmar 1720d starting?

I've had my tractor for a few years now and haven't use a ton,however when I use it I USE it.The tractor has to crank far more then I think it should on a cold start.I've started to give it the loving it deserves as of late since were settled into on our new house finally.Does the 1720d have regular glow plugs that could be going?When the tractor is started and running it runs great all day and will start instantly.I did have to use a screw driver on the lock last year however I still get the red glow light so I assume the plugs are being lit.I got a box of goodies today from hoye tractor so the lock will be fixed this weekend but I'm not thinking that's the issue.Whats everyones thoughts? Should have a thermostart, a little different than a glowplug. It has to have diesel fuel in the little plastic reservoir near the valve cover in order to function. Shouldnt need to use the thermostart when its not cold out side.

Hard starting could be a low compression issue. How many hours on it?

Tractor has about 800hrs.How would I verify the thermostat is working,my guess is that the issue.Is it something that can be gone through and cleaned up?

Pretty sure if your red thermostart light comes on when you turn the key to the left it should then go off automatically after 10-20 seconds. Really can't be accurate with a time on it. Does yours do that? If so, that is the point you want to turn the key to crank position.

Also, after holding the key to the left you should be able to feel the intake manifold where the thermostart element is located and feel it warming a tad.

You can also remove your air intake hose from the manifold and likely see the fire down inside the manifold if working. Takes a few seconds for ignition.

Another simple thing to check, with regard to hard cold start, make sure you have a good battery, and good wire terminal connections. A week battery (or voltage drop across a bad terminal) doesn't provide enough volts to spin the engine over quickly. When cold the engine must turn over fast to detonate the fuel.

Just got home and was able to pull the intake hose off.There is no fire in the hole and no heat whatsoever.I need to troubleshoot this for sure.Where do I begin?

test for 12 volts at the thermostart plug with key to left.

If you have power then make sure fuel is reaching thermostart.

If there is fuel and power I would assume thermostart is faulty and replace the unit.
