Yanmar 3TN72 Timing

I have another thread; but I need some more info trying to get a JD to start!! I own a JD 755 manual & I have done a search but cannot get answers. Does anyone know how to set the timing on a Yanmar Diesel 3TN72?

Timing gears have timing marks.

Exact injection timing is determined by thickness of the shim pack under the injection pump using a "spill timing" procedure, should be covered in the fuel system section of the tech manual.

I understand the timing marks. The JD tech manual I purchased did not have the Yanmar portion covered. I am fishing for answers since I cannot get this old JD to start; but I will be patient. Thanks for the replies. I sent an inquiry to Yanmar; maybe they will send me some data on the procedure!!

Looking at the manual (unless I missed it) CHECKING injection timing apparently isn't covered. They simply say to measure the

STRANGE, the manual I have for a related Yanmar engine with the same type of injection covers the "spill timing" check????

Thanks; I will look into this manual; looks to be up to date compared to what I bought online. As soon as I get the proper tool; will check the compression & update this thread as to what I have found.

Did you ever (as I suggested) disable the glowplugs and give it a tiny whiff of starting fluid?

Yes; but I got nothing. Your manual is very informative; I have a compression tester ordered & will perform the test when it comes in next week. This JD is so old & has been sitting outside for years; so the rings could be stuck or engine could just be shot. I removed glow plugs & turned over engine several times & got the fuel mist spitting out. Installed new glow plugs & still got nothing.
I will know more next week. Do you think I could use some Marvel Mystery oil in the intake & let it sit? Maybe that would release the "possibly" stuck rings? Thanks for all the input.
