I agree. That would be ruled excessive force and get the homeowner jailed.

I use a Grand. The classic type, model. M 1 , as per memory. Suspect low res photos, but the bayonet is sharp for gentle persuasion. Trying to break habbits of leaving keys in cars too.

I think you meant Garand, I googled Grand camera and found nothing.

A surveillance camera will do little to prevent theft, a surveillance camera sign is a better deterrent. A barking dog or two is a pretty good security system as it is much easier to prevent a theft than it is to recover a stolen item.

How do you know it was a kid, do you suspect a neighbor? Has the stolen plate already been recovered and the thief identified?

Many law enforcement agencies use automatic ( passive ) license plate readers on patrol cars and posted along roads. Reporting the plate as stolen to law enforcement might bring the quickest recovery.

I have a Eufy wireless camera system I bought from Amazon a couple yearsa ago. They work well, have super sensitive microphone and two way audio comunication. It has the phone app so it will notify you anywhere on the planet and you can yell at the perp live.The only downside is to remembner to clear the previous days recordings every few days or daily. They have 4K resolution and their night vision is good. Available in 2,3, or 4 camera sets.

One of the funniest and surprisingly effective intruder deterrents is a motion activated water hose .
They are designed to scare stray cats and dogs but with a few simple modifications work really well against human lowlife intruders .
They are commercially available or there are many YouTube clips explaining how to make them .
I use poacher alarms at my farm , one in the barn will burst a plastic drum filled with red fluid over the intruder if they break in via the door .
