(Why did the tractor start only when I bypassed the resistor? ) After I tore the 9n apart,the answer is.... The pointed copper spring contact at the bottom of the coil had worn down so it wasnt making contact with the distributor. When I accidentally bypassed the "infamous resistor",It sent too much current to the coil...which in turn arched from the The pointed copper spring contact to the distributor so thats why the engine started.

I stretched the spring a little bit and Im back in action.

I had EXACTLY the same problem last year.... the ol' girl used to fire up immediately.... then one day took long cranking before it'd start.
By pure chance I removed the coil (expecting a cracked coil) to find that little spring needed a s t r e t c h.... and VOILA! Happy-Happy Joy-Joy!
