Yet another serial number question

If the forum members are not too tired of answering serial number questions, here's another.

My serial number in the usual place is missing. No hint of any number in that location. Must have been ground off or it's a replacement engine. It does have a plate that is riveted on found below the battery area. you can't see it until the battery box is removed (picture attached). On the plate you'll see the following information: Type- 4-28 and the serial number 1441-124CS.

Best I can tell it is an 8N with a serial number somewhere between 250000 and 290000. It's a 4 speed, side mount, one piece shift handle with no proof meter. Is there any chance that I can cross reference the number on the riveted plate to establish the serial number of when this baby was born? Thanks to all! Ooops, selected a gallery photo please disregard.

Nope. The tag means the engine was not originally in a tractor, thus no serial number where it normally would be. What was probably done by a previous owner is a combine engine was installed after the original needed rebuilding. They never stamped the tractor serial number in the block after the switch.

Unfortunately you will never know the exact serial number of the tractor, and you just need to use the features to narrow down the year like you already are doing.

Industrial engine, a replacement. Numbers on
hydraulic pump under the tractor and numbers on rear
axle trumpets may get you close but won't be exact.

Thanks KCM an Kirk - That explains it. No more mystery. Attached a picture - just finished an overhaul. Runs sweet!

I appreciate it so much!

Mineola........unless yer a sphincterly challenged originality authority building a tractor queen, serial number ain't worth 'nuttin'. You already know that you have the 5-nipple side mount and that tells you what your common replaceable parts (points & carbie) will bee. Ennythang else is determined by micrometer while rebuilding the engine. .......the amazed Dell

Dell....I am with you....there is a lot to be said for being practical...I generally don't care for most of my Tractors...but in one case I am restoring one in the "purist" fashion....It preserves the past...history....and something to do with my sons....did the same thing to a 56 Ford Pick-up....

I'm in the same boat as you except I do have the proofmeter, no serial # to be had, and Dell also nomered me "sphincterly challenged" (no offense taken).

Beautiful rebuild, but where did the lights come from? They aren't original. At least they don't look like the ones for my '52 and they are original.
Missing the Ford scroll on the rear fenders too. And the front emblem. $10 at Tractor Supply.
Okay, I'll shut up now. Beautiful tractor anyway.

The all metal gear shift indicates pre-50, then they put big bakelite knob on end of shifter. Casting codes will give best guess time of manufacture.
