YM 1700 starter solenoid

I installed new starter solenoid on my YM 1700, ran maybe a couple of minutes, heard a whining noise and cut off engine and starter was still running. I got off tractor to disconnect the battery cable but instead tapped solenoid lightly and it stopped. I pulled solenoid off and compared to old one and the spring was slightly different so I installed old spring on new solenoid . I thought that fixed it but after running maybe 10-12 hours it started it again. any suggestions?

2 questions, 1 , why did you replace the solenoid? 2, why do you think it's the solenoid rather than the sterter clutching mechanism? The pinion is staying engaged with the flywheel for whatever reason. You need to troubleshoot the solenoid and the starter separately.

I replaced solenoid because I replaced old battery cables and connections were so corroded I broke 1 post off. when I cut off tractor starter keeps spinning but is not engaged with flywheel.

OOPS!. Missed the part where sterter still spinning after shutdown. I have the same sterter but never worked on it. On some the sol. just closes a switch, on others it actually directly moves the pinion into engagement.

Could it be a stuck key-switch? To tell, spin it with a remote starter or whatever it's called. About $10, box with a button on it and two wires with clips. One wire clips on battery pos, other on starter terminal (which is the third, small terminal, not one of the two large terminals). Press the button to energize the starter while bypassing the switch.

It may be Alan, but when I lightly tap starter it quits spinning. I'm thinking solenoid link may be binding, it was very hard to get the spring to stay on solenoid when I installed it. I'm going to JB weld it to solenoid and try that.
