Ym1500 starter problem

The starter motor spins good, but the starter drive does not engage properly, It has always done this but is getting worse. I have checked all connections, and had the starter off,checked teeth on drive and ring gear, and bench tested solenoid and starter ,everything seems to be working properly with no load on it. When drive does engage it starts like it should.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Padgett,

Could it be that you have one of the Chinese knockoff starters. I had a similar problem and found my starter did not have the correct number of teeth nor was it long enough. Got a new starter from Hoye and solved the problem.
