YM1500D Freeze Plug

I have no experience with a freeze plug and only by research have I found out what I have leaking is a freeze plug. Behind the starter is a smooth cap (freeze plug). How do you remove this and how do you install another one with damaging it? Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Can I JB weld it until I can order one? What are the repercussions in JB welding it?

i looked at my 1500(early build"red")and mine has no freeze plug there -does have hex head,screw in oil galley plug a little below the starter though. Old,rusted freeze plugs can be a little stubborn-usually i will drill a hole in a bad freeze plug,thread a sheet metal screw in and use that to pull on.I have used a cut-off wheel in a dremel to cut a slot in the rim of the freeze plug so it can contract and come out-just be careful not to damage the freeze plug hole.JB weld likely will get a good temporary repair if you can get the area clean enough-i can think of no repercussions in using the JB weld besides leak starting again.Replacement freeze plugs can be driven in with a socket and hammer .

I just poke a hole so I can grip it with pliers and muscle it out. Clean the surface well for the new one. Temporary doesn't matter, but you don't want to "weld" the new one so solidly that freeze-pressure can't blow it out.

I would never count on freeze pressure blowing one out. They are not designed as "freeze plugs", they are merely covers for holes drilled in the block for water passages.

Much appreciated to all, I have JB welded it just temporarily until new plug comes in. I have not started it yet, wanted a full cure on JB weld before I did. I will post tomorrow if it leaks or not. Again, Thanx.

IMHO, if the JB Weld holds you are good to go. It's purely accidental when a "freeze plug" protects your engine from freezing. The correct name is "water jacket core plug".

Another solution is the expanding rubber freeze plug repair. Many times when a freeze plug rusts out, the bore in the block is no longer nice and smooth and the replacement "welch plug" type of repair will seep or weep.


Added: Yeah, we need to start putting "freeze plug" in quotes since they aren't really...
