I'm changing the oil before placing tractor up for sale. What is the correct oil filter for this tractor, and what other filters will interchange with it? Nearest Yanmar dealer is 40 miles away and Auto Zone is just down the street. I need one like today.

There are lots for the oil one but I've never found a shop with a cross-listing for Yanmar. Clean up the old one and bring it in for a size match.

FILTERS FOR THE YANMAR YM1700

I have been using the $5 Fram 3593A with the anti-drainback valve for several years. You can also use the WalMart ST3593A($2), Napa Gold 1344,1334,1064, Napa Silver 21334, John Deer M801002, <B><s></s>AutoZone STP S2808<e></e></B>, Mobile M1-104.
The fuel filter should be the Wix 33262 if you have the 2.717" filter.

Oil NAPA 1334

There is a huge risk in using those "should work" filters. I strongly recommend that customers just stick with the right filters. For example, the 6022 air filter that you listed is appx 1/4" NARROWER than the OEM filter. The lid will not clamp down and seal on that narrower filter. You will suck dirt right past the filter &amp; into your engine. We sell lots of rebuild parts to customers who use that exact filter. It wont work! But hey... I guess Id rather sell you a $1,000 engine overhaul than a $12 filter. <E></E>

Also, some of those "should work" oil filters dont have the right bypass settings &amp; filter media. If those are not right 100% of your oil can flow right through the bypass valve &amp; never get filtered.

I just cant understand what the obsession is with finding a "cheaper" filter that should work. Maybe it is the thrill of the hunt? Plus, at my local store the "should fit" filter is over $5 MORE than the right one! Just buy the right filters and save yourself a lot of time &amp; headache.

Yes, I should have been more explicit in indicating I was referring only to the oil filter because there are lots of equivalents for them and I'd never consider any other type of non-Yanmar filter, where there's fewer options anyway.

Even with the oil, I once used a brand-name equivalent. It was a half-inch longer than the OEM, but I figured that was to the good as long as the threads matched. When the end was punctured by a steering part I almost lost my engine.

Grease, oil, and filters are cheap. The parts they protect are not.

I can't agree more about using the right filters, but the nearest Yanmar parts dealer is more than 40 miles away, and ordering one doubles the cost with shipping. I have a buyer coming tomorrow to pick tractor up, and had promised to change oil and filter by the time he gets here.

On the other hand, I'm in the industrial paint business. We sold several thousand gallons of paint a year to Wix for painting oil filters. They would run so many thousand with White paint (Wix)(Motorcraft), so many thousand with blue paint (Delco), and so may thousand of 3 other colors, each. All on the same filters....they just changed colors and kept running the line. The only difference was the color and logo on the filter. Yanmar, JD, Delco, etc. do not make filters. They are made by companies who are in the business of making filters such as Wix and labeled with those companies paint and logo's. With that said, you can't condemn one brand of filter w/o knowing the original maker. Chances are, that the only real difference is the paint job.

True, like batteries, headlights and tires, vehicle makers don't make their own filters. But are you sure it's only the paint and label that changes?

When I was a newspaper's consumer-advice columnist, I read one testing organization's report that, to put it simply, the best oil filters were Fram's. I learned that the most filters in Canada were sold by Canadian Tire (CT) under their own brand name. I found that these imprint filters were made by Fram but about half the price of the Frams they also sold. So I needed one more piece to recommend that my readers use CT filters.

I asked Fram if the CT ones were any different from their "Fram" ones. All they'd say on the record is that their imprint lines were made to the buyer's specs. They implied (but wouldn't declare) that the Fram line was made to a higher standard -- which would have been consistent with the test results that started my research.

I completely agree that most filters out there are made by just a few big companies. Look at Champion. They build dozens of brands... actually more than dozens. All from the same assembly line. Probably to different specs but I'm sure they all meet some minimum standard.

I honestly dont care if a customers uses a wix or a fram or a champion. Just be sure it is <B><s></s><U><s></s>correct<e></e></U><e></e></B>. Like the 6022 air filter. You can get that in many different brands and they are all the same filter ... and they are <U><s></s>all wrong<e></e></U> and will all ruin your engine. There is NOT a wix or fram or napa or any other brand air filter that will work for that application out there. Our filters are made specifically for this application. A sample of the correct air filter was sent out &amp; they reproduced it exactly.

Others have found oil filters that will "work". A NAPA 1348 I believe will screw on nicely. The threads are right but they are a little too loose &amp; the oil filter will actually pop off &amp; all your oil will pour out on the ground when you are running (hope your warning light works &amp; you catch it in time).

I'm not saying that our brand filters are better than a Wix or Napa. I'm just saying that ours are right &amp; there are lots out there that are not right.

I gree 100% with Aaron and Alan . I am no mechanic by any means; so in order to make sure that my machine is protected, I don't take chances by buying filters and parts that are not proven to work with my Yanmar; so far every part or filter that Aaron has recommended has worked like it should.
