YM2000 getting a little hot

I am still having issues keeping my YM2000 cool, ran it over the weekend with a 4 ft bushhog, got up to about 180 or so after 45 min work (4th gear, 18'' grass), temp showed on a temp gauge that was installed instead of the idiot light..ran it with the 1400 model tiller behind it and it got up to 190 or so..i have had the radiator flushed out, changed coolant to a 75-25 mix of water to antifreeze ratio, I cleaned the radiator with air, and sprayed the fins out with water, there are a couple of cool spots on the radiator when checking with my hand, would this indicate a blockage? the areas are pretty small, could that be an issue? Also a concern that I have is that there is a fuzzy spot (dust and oil?) on the front left corner and rear left corner of where the head gasket seals the head and the block. Is this normal? no drips, no bubbles in the radiator on a cold start, no oil in the water or vice versa. I guess its new radiator time, but if those fuzzy spots indicate a bad head gasket then is it a sound investment to spend $300 or so on a radiator and hoses?

Why do you think you need a radiator? Do you suppose the block could be plugged? Reverse flush the system. No need for 75-25 mixture, use 50-50.

Unhook upper hose at rad, shove a garden hose into upper hose and seal with rags. Turn on water, and let it run out top of rad til clear. Should be able to handle full force of water if clear. you might want to cover electricals with plastic bags.

ok, i will try that today if i can... i have read about using a chemical flushing agent, any thoughts on that?

also, the fuzzy spots on the block/head area, any concern about those?

I just use water. Flushed mine with water and changed the 50/50 mix a month or so apart and it Stays clean now. If it's bad enough that your having to use Chemicals to try and get it flushed clean may as well take it to a radiator shop and get it checked, cleaned or anything that they find that needs to be addressed. Make sure the Light working. If you ground the wire to the water temp. sensor the light on the dash should come on. The senor is set to come on I believe at 220 deg.
http://www.hoyetractor.com/overheating.htm Never seen my 2000 go over 195 deg. working it like a Dog on 90+deg day useing a Rs 1400 also <E></E>

well i suppose if yours runs at 195 then 180 or 190 might not be too hot....just a little worrisome to me.

one more question, if its a head gasket issue does the outside temp really matter? if i run the tractor when its 60 outside it doesnt get hot, but anything over about 85 or so and its an issue. i figured if its a gasket issue it wont matter because it will get hot either way, is this correct?

Flushed the block, it took all the water the hose was putting out, refilled 50/50, Could this getting hot be caused by a worn out water pump? Do the impellers wear down or does the pump usually seize up?

They either leak or fly apart, never pump poorly. Are you saying it's still getting hot? I would not waste coolant without knowing prob is solved.

Not sure if the overheating is fixed yet, it rained and cooled off yesterday, so bush hogging was not an option to try and see if its fixed.. but its gonna be hot this weekend, should know soon enough..

thanks for the info on the water pump.. im not much of a mechanic and am just trying to exhaust all possibilities at my level before moving on to something as complex and expensive as a head gasket replacement..

If all is right, ambient temp, and how hard you work it should have no effect on your tractor's temp, just exagerates a problem. Wipe the fuzzy spot off with a shop rag.

ok, i worked the tractor pretty good this past weekend... no overheating.. got up to 150 or so, verified by using 2 different thermometers inserted into radiator after removing cap... BUT.. the outside temp was only 75 degrees... I dont get it.. if there is a problem shouldnt it show up regardless of air temp??

My 2000 gets hot as well when the temp reaches about 80. I bush hog a large pasture at least 4 times a year. I monitor the temp and when it gets hot I just shut down to cool for a while. I think its just the model of the tractor and poor air circulation

You definitely have a heating problem that needs to be addressed. With waterpump and no tstat YM2000's run notoriously cool. My YM2000B, (factory gauge), never gets over 155-1608 in any weather, unless the rad gets clogged the debris.

You might also check the fan belt and get a new rad cap.

Possible symptoms of a leaky HG are
-coolant in the oil, so take accurate measures of the oil level to see if it ever goes UP.
-oil in the coolant, so check for an oil smell in the rad or take a coolant sample to an engine shop that has a hydrocarbon sniffer (made by Snap-on).
