i have had my 2200 for a while now,,,yesterday it started making a louder knocking sound than usual..no oil smoke and has good oil pressure....i have pulled the pan and the rod and main bearing seem fine...what else could it be...

it could be up top, pull valvle cover and see if all are moving the same amount or maybe you have a push rod that is bent or a damaged rocker allowing the push rod to slide off to the side and not open a valve, what else happend to make it noisier ?

It could be anything in the engine, including bad fuel or carbon deposits. I would try a diesel fuel additive such as Power Service. You can't see worn rod bearings by just pulling the pan. A few .000" wear can cause a piston to contact a valve.

the valve cover was the first thing i pulled,,i was in the middle off doing a bush hogging job when it started making the louder knocking sound, and shut it down..first thing i thought ,,rocker arm...no slack in them and push rods seemed to go up and down like they were suppose too. loaded it up brought it home and pulled the pan and felt no slack in the rods, went ahead and pulled rod caps, they looked really good hardly any wear..any ideas..

thanks for the suggestions guys,,i went ahead and called hoye and explained what was going on and the guy told me the noise was probably coming from the bottom end and recommended i do a simple refresh on the engine, so i ordered the parts today....will reply with out come when i get it up and running again....

"Time is moving on Alan, I think that might have been 2 years ago."

Wait a minute there. Are you trying to tell me it's not 2012 any more?

If it were mine I would still squander $5 on a bottle of POWER SERVICE before tearing into it. Excessive carbon can cause pre-ignition, resulting in a "spark knock", same as in a car engine. Hoye may call it a "simple refresh", doing it every day, but to most guys it's still an overhaul.
