This is a screenshot of your post that I am quoting.

Your name is in the same place mine is in. Just to the left of the envelope and bell icons.

There's a discussion about adding your location to your information. Please go to Site Comments and have a look. It would benefit most of us when folks post things that are area-specific. I'm not connected to the Administrators of this Forum, nor do I speak for them. I'm just a member concerned with making this work for the most folks it can. steve
When I feel a discussion warrants it I give a general location but not to the point of being extremely vague. I'm in the Western Finger Lakes Region in New York about an hour SE of Rochester, NY. A good enough description when talking about weather events and such but still gives me some privacy. One thing I have noticed when talking about New York I see descriptions such as the Leatherstocking region or the Genesee region falling into increasing disuse. More government statistical references would have me in Western NY which I will use from time to time if the discussion warrants that. But a large region which would have me over 3 hours away from its most southwestern point.

I'm confused also
Public Service Announcement:

You will notice some user avatars now display their location along with the user name.

You can do it by clicking your name, upper right (orange circle).

Then click Account Details (purple circle)

Then scroll down a bit to Location (yellow circle)

The above is how on my tablet or laptop/PC. Your cellphone might be different. My android phone can be viewed horizontal and then the above way is the same. If held upright, I have to click the bars in the upper left then a window pops up (shown in last picture below) Then you can continue same as above via your username. iPhones might be different than android phones.

Your entry can be as vague as you like if you like at all.

Don't forget to click the Save button at the bottom,

This feature was turned on by Admin on Jan. 24th or 25th.

When you see someone's location under their username next to their posts, it is a link. Clicking the location/link will open a new window of a map showing where that location is.

P.S.
I am in no way affiliated with this forum other then a member.

The topic is posed in this manner. “How can members be convinced to put a general location in their profiles?”
It might have been to be innocuous, but it does not seem to ring that way as written. It reminds me of a statement that was spoken by a past director of a fairly successful steamshow that I’m involved with that was stated as such, “How can we force more members to volunteer?” For some of us it might be like trying to convince a pig to load itself in that trailer. In my case, similar to the pig, I don’t care to give you my location. As I stated if I want you to know I well put it in my post.
I took the statement as a question to the site administrators and not a demand, and he got a good answer.
Many times someone has asked for help or had an item I was interested in but don't list where they are located, location request are made of which the OP might give right away, later that day, the next day or never. Sometimes when they finally do list their location their hundreds of miles away and to far for me to justify traveling there
It was a while before I knew the members map existed and since there's no direct link from this sent (that I know of) I often forget it's there
As a test I found a link the the map and looked up each member that has posted on this thread
As for locations some are listed here and on the map, Some are only listed on the map, Some are only listed here and some are not listed on either
I'm not saying I want to know your physical address and what your wearing today, but a simple listing of the state, providence or foreign country one lives in would help someone decide within seconds if they can help or are seriously interested in a item the OP has listed

My location was listed on the old site and I did not realize it was not listed on this new site, it is now

Holy cow, some folks are paranoid 😲. Ain't no one in this country ( USA) and on this forum living in total secrecy 🤣🤣 . " Big brother" knows plenty about you 😜. Kevin..... In Sylacauga, AL. (Want an address? Happy to give it out. 20+ people a month come to my place and buy tractor parts. Double that many get parts shipped to them, with my return address on the box). Now I'm scared , better get my tinfoil hat back on........
