Zenith vs. Marvel-Schebler.

The carburetor on my tractor needs attention. I really don't feel like rebuilding it. I am thinking about buying a new one for it. It has a Marvel-Schebler on it right now, and was thinking about buying a Zenith instead. Are Zenith carburetors any better than Marvel - Schebler?

Its your $$ but why buy a carb for say $200 plus when you can rebuild the old one for $25 or so. Or pay some one to rebuild it and still save half the cost of a new one

If there is nothing really wrong with your carb, like something broken or worn or missing or the wrong
carb...

Best to keep the one you have. Many times, in fact nearly every time you buy a replacement carb, it's going
to be a "fit all" replacement. The linkage will be different, the venturi size may be different, the jetting
will be different...

Those old carbs were built simple and field serviceable, don't be afraid of it. It's a lot easier to kit it
than have to deal with governor adjustments because the new linkage is different!

Get the right carb for your tractor. The internal jetting is what is important, not the look on the outside. Both companies produced good products, and both companies made generic carb bodies with internal jets which were custom sized for each model tractor's engine. Anything new will have pot-metal castings. You don't want this. Stick with cast iron, it does not corrode quickly, wears well, and doesn't warp and leak if you over torque a screw.

If you can do without it for a week or so, get hold of Royse here. Everyone that has had him work on their carb has raved about his work. Can tell you they look like new when you get it back.

Nothing wrong with the Zeniths, they work great when they're
adjusted right. Getting parts for them can be a challenge if and
when you need to rebuild them though.

What kind of tractor and what model Marvel Schebler do you have?
I will rebuild most any carb but I prefer to test them on my own
tractors when I'm done so I can adjust them. That way you get
them back, bolt them on and go about your merry way worry free.

Since we are not likely to be talking about aircraft parts here, Zenith took over Marvel-Schebler in 1990.

So I don't think a new "Marvel" carb is gonna happen for you unless you find a NOS unit.

If you have a carter that needs attention, buy either a zenith or marvel-schebler. Both work great and can be serviced.

I had a carter on my super a, installed a new zenith configured specific to my super a, I could not be happier.

The new ones are cast aluminum. The cast steel ones are more period correct, but the aluminum one I have seems just fine. The carter carbs were always aluminum, but that is not why they suck.

No matter what you do if you don't put an inline filter in just before the carb you've wasted your $$$.

Thanks for all the responses. I've decided to rebuild the carburetor I have. I was just feeling lazy and thought it would be easier to buy a new one and be done with it. But the chance of a new carb not being of the right configuration would make things go from bad to worse in a very short time. The only thing that's wrong with my carb is that the needle valve leaks. A new kit should remedy this a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

As was stated, both M/S and Zenith made great carbs.Older ford tractors used M/S and model ''A'' fords used Zenith.Each ran just fine with those carbs.I'd go with a good cleaning and rebuild of your carb.If all that's wrong with yours is a leaky needle and seat,get the "zip" kit and replace that along with seals.Make sure the seal is installed under the seat and that the seat is tight.
