ZTU water pump question

Is a little front-to-back play in the water pump pulley normal on these? Spins fin, just moves slightly back & forth when you push on the pulley. This is a used water pump that was sold as ready to go. I haven't cranked it yet, but now I'm thinking maybe I should find a rebuild kit to be on the safe side. Thanks

Now I don't know about that water pump, but if it were me I'd find a rebuild kit. That doesn't sound good to me.

Pump seldom give any problems except baffle rots out reducing flow.

The risk of the fan spinning into the radiator would make me change the bearing. The old bearing might go 10 years or 10 minutes (my luck typically). Near zero back and forth movement is what a person finds on pretty much all tractors.

The water pump shouldn't have any end to end play, not much at the very most. the pump impeller should maintain a set clearance from the baffle to pump efficiently. On these, Z, ZA, ZB, and R, they're all the same. The baffle is what rusts away. Check that, once it's got holes in it the engine will overheat. you have to take the pump off, 3 bolts. Someone used to sell an aftermarket baffle made from stainless, eliminating the rust out problem

These pumps are belt driven, fan has its own bearings, independent of the pump

Thanks everyone, I ordered a rebuild kit yesterday. It's a bit frustrating, but much less frustrating than running the risk of running the engine hot
