I'm changing head gasket on my ford 8n I know I need to put high temp sealant on the bolt threads, do I need to put the sealant towards the top of the bolt where the washer is ?

Hello Greg, welcome to YT! Never worked on one of them Firds, from general knowledge my opinion would be if the sealer applied to the thread area did it’s “thing” properly and the gasket sealed correctly nothing should be leaking up along the shank of the bolt to reach its head. I would put a drop or two of oil on the mating surface under the head to give it lubrication for torquing. Just FYI for future reference, there is a Fird N forum on YT under the Manufacturers section, that is the best place to ask questions about those little boogers. There are guys over there that know all things about them Firds, believe me you don’t really have to ask because they like telling you what they “know”!

This is what we use in all our flat head motors....never had any issues, probably done 25-30. The copper coat gets sprayed on both sides of the gasket, the black goo goes on the threads. Also......use a tap and die set to clean all the threads, makes life easier 😀..... torque it down in the proper sequence and in increments, run it to temperature, then retorque......

For sealing head bolt threads you can never go wrong using

Permatex 80019 Aviation Form-A-Gasket No. 3 Sealant

They make all kinds of head bolt sealants I have tried a few that were recommended. After a few leaks I went back to my tired and true friend 80019 : ) Yes your 8N needs a sealant on all the head bolts to block, none needed at the bolt head. Head bolt washers are not a OEM part so I don't know what the deal is with them.

As for the head gasket there is no one fitz-all sealant, use what the gasket manufacture recommends.
