I’m intrigued by this little tractor. Looks similar to a Cub Cadet. Anyone know if Montg Wards sold Cub cadets under their own name?

That's a Gilson. I have one very similar, also branded as a Montgomery Ward. They were heavy built with a cast front axle. Belt drive to a cast transmission. The one I have has a mechanical variable speed setup besides the 4 speed transmission. Also have the rototiller mounted on it and it is a BEAST! Mine has a 16 hp B&S engine.

The guy who knew everything about the Gilson/Montgomery Ward tractors was on this forum several years ago. He went by the handle "El Toro". I believe I read he passed away around 2017 or 2018. Perhaps some his old posts would have some imformation on that tractor.

The tractor itself looks to be a Gilson or Wards. Same frame and dash design. This is the one I have. Notice that the starter/generator belt cover is the same along with the shifter and the brake lock knob to the right of the shifter.

The design looks similar to the Simplicity built Allis-Chalmers tractors.
Simplicity was even owned by Allis for a time until Simplicity bought the company back.
Simplicity had strong ties with Montgomery Ward as well going back to their rugged walk-behind models which I remember well.
Some of those walk-behinds even had a rugged gear box with a shift lever reachable from the handlebars.
I would guess this is a Simplicity built Wards tractor.
