Found a Farmall 400 at a local on-line auction. Row crop/wide front end, clean, nice paint, no oil or grease showing, good tires, forget the name but has a commercial 3-point hitch. Gauges all work. Lights work. Seat great, battery box great. Looks to have been stored inside. Has 3-point hitch brush hog with it.

Auction end Oct 9, this Sunday. What's it worth? Should have taken picture. I looked it over pretty good.

I had one several years ago, It had plenty of power, pulled 13 foot Kewanee (?) disc like it nothing, pulled 4 bottom plow great.

Got closer look today. Probably better around but I like it.

Can't read the name of 3-point hitch.

Other tractors at the auction. John Deere lawn tractor with mowing deck. D17 Allis with what appears to be a John Deere mower. I believe behind the Allis is an Army 6X6.

More pics. Long time since I saw this. Tire size not worn off - thin ribs still there.

Totally different dash than what I was use to. Worked for a farmer during my sophomore and Junior year (only 59 years ago). His 400 was like my 400 (I bought my 400 September 1981 (43 years ago). It came with a John Deere mower - gave $1800 for it. No fenders, no tach and this one has a hydraulic system different - add-on for the hydraulic 3-point hitch?

That’s the only dash a Farmall 400 would have came with, 3 gauges.. amp, oil, temp left to right. Illumination light up in the little hood right over them. If it didn’t have a tach it would just have a blanked off hole there flush with the dash. And that was the common hydraulic lever set up. Three control levers were very common, one for a rear remote and one each up under the gas tank for left and right cultivator cylinders or loader connections. Rare or at least in the area I was from to only have one hydraulic remote. The only 400 that would be quite a bit different would be the International W400, that was a McCormick Deering “standard” tractor style, see link. IH W400 on Tractordata
The $3000 figure is not necessarily out of line, I am not sure if Jim was figuring in the rotary mower or not. That looks like easily a $800 - $1000 plus unit being a Woods brand and looks nice, not abused. The 3 point is a good addition as well. For it to stand alone at $3000 for me the TA would need to work flawlessly.

Keep in mind those tractors were considered disposable chore tractors in 1981. This whole tractor collecting thing hadn't caught on yet and driven up the prices.

Restored one just a year ago and the fella planned on keeping it with his collection but another collector saw it and he wanted it to finish his collection of the 100 series and the 50 series and offered him $6500. He sold it. The dash looks like its black in the pic. They should be battle gray. That's what I call the color anyway.

I've read of the 400 being a chore tractor. When I worked for Lyle Barkley his 400 was a work horse. It pulled a 4 bottom plow like nothing, monster disc (fold up ends) and harrow looked a mile wide. I had to learn to turn early with that harrow. Mine I already told of - plowed, disced, mowed hay, had a Brillion stock chopped I used as brush hog (still have it), baled and more. Used it for logging. Giant oak trees, downed, hook chain so when pulled it lifted. 2nd gear just over idle, it would wrinkle the tires, dig in and keep going.
It developed a leak, coolant in the oil, cylinder cracked, and then a dry block - whole cylinder would have to be bored out and sleeved. International dealer wanted more to fix it than what I paid for it. Sold it, still got $800 for it.

Key start, but there's black push button to the side that I question. Funny, key start, just need a screw driver, just like my 1964 Oliver 1650.
The Brushbull looks almost new. Same with the 3-point hitch.

No doubt of the 400 being painted. The dash of my past 400 was gray.

What I liked about the hydraulic levers, sort of snap over, pull or push and when equipment was all the way up or down the lever would kick to neutral. My 1964 Oliver 1650, I have to hold the lever until all way up or down.

I thought you meant it was like a totally different layout. Originally I think the x00 series had a regular automotive type ignition that you turned against a spring past the on position to crank. The x50 series has a on/off ignition and a push button start, not sure if it was configured exactly like yours. I want to say the key was in the panel opposite of the tach below the removable dash. We had both a Farmall 300 and 350 on the farm when I was growing up. I am pretty sure the actual key for that ignition is attached in the link. Universal ing. key

I guess I have to start over. Couldn't find my bid or Farmall tractor. Auction lists it as McCormick. It has Farmall 400 but above in smaller letters is McCormick. Is there much difference? On Dial Up and I can't get anywhere today. Serial numbers different for Farmall 40 and McCormick Farmall 400?
Had brother with me. They hydraulics are different than what I had. Was a block with a inch or so steel tube. It ain't there. Had that tube comes loose twice and lost all the hydraulic oil.

It’s an International Harvester Farmall 400 same as the ones you knew, they all said McComick!! The auction folks are none the wiser. It had it on the emblem and so that is what they wrote on the description. All the painted/printed info on the SN plate that would tell them it is an IH is faded, wire brushed or sand blasted off.
