Oliver 1850 front rims

I have an Oliver 1850 with narrow front rims and tires on it. Do the rims need to be Oliver specific or will other wide rims fit. It has a loader on it so I want more support.
 
I have your model Oliver. It doesn't have a loader on it, but I do have a similar size tractor with a loader. And the Allis has a similar front end, and wheels THAT ARE A WEAK LINK. These tractors were really never meant for mounting loaders. And.......wide tires/rims pose a problem. The larger negative offset required to clear the kingpin, leads to wheel cracking if the loader is used in severe conditions.

I have two 190XT's. Both have operated with the same loader, in the same conditions. (reason for owning 2 is another story)

I do like the wider front tires for the increased flotation they provide.

During the Winter, the drylot is exceptionally muddy, and you encounter deep ruts. On top of this, you're running at high speed to keep from getting stuck. This is Hell on the front wheels. BTW, this is the second Allis.......same front tires.

This is what that negative offset can do to your wheels. Heavy loading, repeated cycles(fatigue), and side loading when running in soft ground.

The lug holes are a problem area. Stress concentration around a hole.

You can keep buying wheels, or modify the wheels to deal with the increased stress. I'm replacing the centers here. Once the center is cut out, the remaining cracks are repaired.

The cracks are V'd out, then welded on one side of the wheel. I recommend welding them uphill. Better control, and fusion. Then the cracks are back gouged with a die grinder on the opposite side, until you run into the weld you made on the front side. Fill in the V's you just made, and you have a full pen weld.

I won't bore you guys with the entire machining process...................this is what you wind up with. A new wheel center that's made from 3/4" material. These are hub piloted wheels, so make sure you make the new wheel centers to pilot on the hub........NOT THE LUGS. The hub takes the weight, not the lugs.

Welding the new center in the wheel isn't a simple process. I made a jig that fits any wheel I need to work on. These new centers have to be perfectly centered, and perfectly planar to the wheel dish.............otherwise you get unacceptable runout.

The new center is very carefully tacked with multiple tacks. This is to prevent distortion. Then tacks ground to accept finish welds.

Weld it HOT on the first side.

Because you ran it HOT on the front side, you'll get some minimal penetration on the opposite side. Once you clean off the slag, you'll see where you wound up. This will be the base for the next root pass.

Root pass is done with same rod, 7018, but in small 3/32 diameter, which enables you to get into the narrow root. And this pass is done EXTREMELY HOT...............and shoving the rod into the puddle repeatedly as your root pass progresses. You're gouging into the backside of the weld on the opposite side. Absolute full penetration. Ain't pretty, but it's just a root pass. Penetration is king.......not aesthetics. This is gonna get covered up

Ya wind up with this. AFTER A TON OF MACHINE WORK, AND A TON OF GRIEF. Wheel center had to be made, hub had to be remachined to correct the damage done by the cracked wheel, and to add longer studs, plus facing it to get rid of the damage caused by the damaged wheel fretting against it.

You can buy weld-on discs to reinforce these wheels, but IMHO...........they're crappy. They're made to simply weld to the face of the wheel. This is a lousy way to do it, and it will change your offset.

So anyways....................I like the wider front tires, but beware........they can come with some issues. And.........I haven't even gotten into the repairs that have been required on the spindles over the years, due to the large offset. Anytime you increase offset, you're making your wheel into a longer lever, which tends to break spindles over time as they fatigue. For me, the wider tires are worth the trouble..........but I have the stuff to repair them.
 
IF you can get hubs to fit your bearings go to 8 bolt wheels the center bolt pattern is larger making it closer to the tire on the wheel thus helping to eliminate that problem and you can get them in both 15and 16 inch. Also look at the original centers in the wheels some are real thick like about a 1/4 inch and some are pretty thin like only about 1/8 inch. We use the heavier wheels on our loader with 9.5l's or 11L's only had about 1or2 wheels problems on our loader. The spindles were always the problem on it a 574 IH Dad got a spindle from a 1466 with the 6 bolt hub abd never have had a problem with that one since.
 
Hey wheel makes centers for replacement both a slip in and he original one that you need to press in . I've used both. I have also used those weld on reinforcing rings and cut the center out cleaned up and welded one in for a set of bolt holes on our 1466 that had a cracked set of holes in the wheel. I guess i've done about anything you can think of to a wheel to fixe then including welding up the old holes and then drill a bevel to fit the nuts holding them on.

Thank you! I really don’t plan on using it hard. Just stress some dirt and gravel for the driveway. I like the way the wider tires look, but not worth all the extra trouble.

Then there are those of us who have had a loader on a tractor for over 40 years and never broken a single rim...

Really, breaking rims is the exception not the rule. Buy a good quality rim, check the lugs periodically, and you'll be fine.
