Gas-proof sealant for 601 workmaster

I recently added a manual fuel valve (near the glass bowl filter) because my stock fuel valve is leaking when the screw is in the closed position. Before I attached the manual fuel valve, I checked to see if the stock valve was leaking in the “open” position. Gas level was above the inlet screen in the tank. After two hours, I rechecked the stock valve and everything was dry, so I installed my 1/4 turn fuel valve. I checked the stock fuel valve this AM (about 24 hours after the manual valve was installed and it is leaking droplets about every 30 seconds. This is with the manual valve in the off position. Guys, I’m 83 years old and I’m really not up to replacing/removing the stock valve. My question is does any one know of a pliable gas-proof compound that would seal the stock valve’s screw, from the outside of the valve body, with the screw out in the on position. This isn’t my usual method of repair, but again I’m just too darn old to wrestle with removal of the stock valve. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know of anything that will work with it actively leaking. If you eventually run out of fuel and get the fitting dry, you could try Permatex Aviation gasket #3. It's supposed to be fuel proof.

I know you don't want to hear it, but I'd find a friend who will work for a donut and coffee to help you out and get it done right.

Not sure on an 601 but on my 861 with the bigger tank it still looks like there would be room to R&R the gas valve in place. Yes it's close quarters and yes a lot of it would be done by feel but I'd at least make an attempt to fix the leak the right way rather than trusting a half @ssed repair.

Most of these on/off gas valves have a hex packing nut on the valve shaft for compressing packing. Using a wrench tighten that nut until the valve is harder to open/close. When the tank is empty the valves packing media can be replaced if desired with stock packing available at any auto parts store.
You might ask a relative or neighbor for help. There are even mobile mechanics available.

I would take that hex packing nut loose and wrap it with lots of Teflon tape. Use teflon as the packing material.
Then tighten the packing nut.
I wonder if dental floss would act like packing material? I never tried it, just a thought.

Alternative- just use valve packing to pack a valve. If you like Teflon, use Teflon packing. FYI Permatex #2 or (pre-thinned) #3 is fuel resistant.

I agree, it comes in rope form, and various diameters. For this valve I'd want the smallest dia., too large and it cannot seal properly.
