I agree probably some kind of cover for shade. And more than likely homemade using what they had available.I wonder if the upright steel that you see are remnants of a canvas cab?

They look like big hand levers sticking up. Never seen that.
I'm with rustred on the timbers. One on each side, front to back. Cut a slope on the bottom of each timber. Attach them at the front axle, and winch it onto the trailer. Looks like it found a new home, likely with an incurable rust addict. Probably a good deal for someone motivated to skid it onto their trailer.I'm with rustred on the timbers.
