Tractor Batteries

I needed a new battery for my 7030 and researched the Walmart batteries, bought the one with the most CCA. (750) Installed it today and it is much smaller that the battery I replaced. What size batteries are in tractors., I think this is a 23 and was the biggest one I saw. Thing still cost $140.00.

I have a parasitic drain I that I can't find so I disconnect the battery, hopefully the alternator will keep it charged when working and I won't need a battery tender.

Different tractors have different size batteries. Looking at an AGCO battery chart it looks like the AC7030 had Group 30 batteries. I would have gone to Group 31 batteries if they would fit. What group battery did you take out?

It's a Kubota 7030 and I didn't even look at the group, it's on its way to recycle. But it was sure bigger.

For the most part, the higher the CCA, the thinner the plates. For me at least, buying severe-duty batteries for a tractor really helps longevity in an unsprung condition. I bought such a battery for my MF 135, gave the tractor to my nephew 2½ yrs ago when the battery was 8 yrs old. As far as I know it's still it the tractor.

On that note- an instructor at a seminar indicated that the highest CCA was not necessarily the best option as the thinner plates were more susceptible to vibration.

Google says it takes a group 29 or 30.

My local auto parts store has a selection of reconditioned batteries for about $50.00. I have used those in smaller applications. My MF 202 has had one for at least two years.

Well I have noticed a reduced overall dimension on my replacement batteries. I'm thinking they figured out a better way to make batteries....like putting handles on batteries, and sealing them rather than having to monitor and replace water over time. I like them. What I do is put a trickle charger on all my batteries...road vehicles that aren't used frequently too. I buy the one that has a 13.5V baby sitting mode. Sometimes I'll go back and check the cut off voltage and it's always at 13.5. I have used other cheap chargers but they go on up to 14.5 over time.....I guess 14.5 continuous is bad on batteries as I had problems. Maybe over time that voltage boils the water out the the vent hole on sealed batteries. With the current ones no problems.

The battery itself has a parasitic drain!
Please explain. A parasitic drain is a component of the tractor draining the battery when the tractor is off and sitting. Generally, a 30 milliamp draw is considered acceptable on a car or truck.

A parasitic drain is anything that drains the battery while off a sitting.
While the word parasitic drain is most often used for an external component draining the battery an internal short inside the battery is also considered a parasitic drain.

Parasitic drain is in the tractor wiring and I can't find it. It is so small that there is no spark when I switch the battery on in the dark. Putting a switch on the battery solved it! Tractor sits 10 - 20 times more than it runs.

for group 31 battery i buy them at heavy duty truck dealer my go to place is Packer City IH they are the cheapest are fresh they sell a ton of batteries

FWIW I buy those $ 39.99 HF battery charger maintainers and keep them on my batteries all winter while I am not using them. I have even rejuvenated dead batteries by leaving them on a battery for several months. My most recent success is on a AGM battery that had been setting in a vehicle for about 2 years. Dead completely. I put it on the HF charger for about 6 months or more and just left it. Today to my amazement it showed 14.3 volts and I unhooked it and put a load test on it and it held a strong 12 volts steady. I put in a 3.7 Ford Interceptor and it is working fine. I have batteries 6 years old that are still working fine. 👨‍🌾
