Pulling a 706 Diesel questions?

Recently we (Gransons) bought a 706D for tractor pulling and getting a gas JD 720 ready for next year, too. TRIAL AND ERROR IS GOOD BUT A LITTLE EXPERT ADVISE HELPS A LOT!!!! All is new 2 us, my other Granson has a WD and WD45 he has pulled a few times. I guess I am the metal man in the mix, spent a day today 95 degree day making the pulling hitch. He bought a different draw bar dedicated for pulling only and I fabricated a kick butt hit hitch for it. He pulled it (706D) once last year the day after he purchased it using a shaky hitch system with less than a desired outcome, but that isn’t where I am going😄.

The tractor (706D) has plenty of power there but he didn’t start out in the right gear nor did he use the torque. All you guys that have experience, what would you pull the 708D in???? Where does his torque come into play May sound foolish but he has a pull in a couple weeks and I really would like to see that tractor get down and pull like I know it can. *******Any personal input would be greatly appreciated.

I’m old and not born on a farm though some family had farms and back in the day that is where you worked as a young man and our first serious jobs but….. I only went to tractor pulls and I am -NO HELP TO MY GRANDKIDS CAUSE I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE DO’S AND DON’T OF TRACTOR PULLING BUT WOULD LIKE TO HELP MORE, OTHER THAN MAKING PARTS!

The old saying about the torque is it means your in the wrong gear twice. Start out win the lower gears ttill you see what it has and go up from there. Remember the heavier you pull the smaller the gear you want to run. Most guys that just start pulling think they have a beast and find out how hard that sled actually pulls. Good luck for the boys in the future. It is fun when you get it all right.

Appreciate the come back. I see pulling is a lot different than the old stone boats and guys having fun sitting on hay bails and jumping on the boat as it goes by….🤣.. Pulling in ‘idle speeds’ 3-5 mph is confusing to me and has to be hard on the tractors ain’t it???? Boys are having a blast and put a lot of sweat and blood into being able to buy their tractors. Wish I was more help!

The right gear 3-5 mph can work just fine but 3 mph for that tractor might be a little to slow. Does the places you pull have a tire size rule for those speed limits? Here you can run up to 14-9-38's or equivulant but 5 mph we can run 18-4's.

Suggest to anyone , work on traction .
I gage the my tractor pull on movement of sled till the engine stalls without tires slipping in every track surface . About best it can do .

Done very competitive pulls with a less than average engines performance by tractor set up for traction and weight placement about the center of gravity of the tractor.
Just what I do and suggest .

Sounds like you need to go in a lower gear to me:unsure:

When we first got the '63 706D Demonstrator, it was of course turned up a bit, with 18.4-34s loaded and four sets of weights. It was matched to a 5-bottom Steerable plow, as IH was selling them as a 5-bottom tractor. It would pull it pretty well in Southern Tier NY dirt in L3 with the TA ahead but was working pretty hard, wouldn't happily have L4. Gramps switched to a 4-bottom the next year, and it would loaf in L3, and pretty happy in L4

Mmmmm… Grandson pulled his 2nd time ever with his 706D on dirt. Tried a second gear config. but it never worked his engine. He polled in 4H TA ahead. No bellowing black just an easy walk to 175 ft (250 won by a hydro JD). He told me he had the throttle pegged but the engine wasn’t working hard at all… He’s still learning by trail an error but what are we doing wrong. CAN YOU PULL THE TA BACK PART WAY THROUGH A PULL TO GET MORE TORQUE??? Never spun a tire…. We have no access to a sled other than pulls to try and figure this out. He wants to keep it ‘stock’ so how many problems can be had by turning it up or is it all gearing. HE DID WIN ‘Best Original’ in the tractor show. Not to proud to learn!!!

This pulling org had him pull in the ‘Farm Tractor’ class not antique at #9000. He was pulling against newer hydrostatic JD which took the class. Each pull sponsor organization seems to have different rules. Out new 18” hitch on the 706D had to be changed before the pull (We weren’t prepared for this to say the least) to 20” which seems crazy for a 13” draw bar. Anyone have thoughts on this???? What do you all do…..

Found that out , you have to adjust to different tracks ,time of day, and organization rules . Tractor may be too new to be in that organization rules too be antique. Check that out .

Boy howdy on the different tracks- around here we have a few that are pure sand, and with a high HP rig, are a PITA to get moving on. We run a Pro Modified pulling truck with a 672 ci 460 Ford- honks pretty good. We just ran in pulls at Sacramento and Santa Rosa on the 1-mile horse/ motorcycle tracks- that fluff they like for the horses is the worst for pulling on
