While growing up, we didn’t have a whole lot of money. Growing up on a dairy farm, and mom having a big garden, we never starved, but we had little money.
Our dairy feed supplier did give S&H green stamps. While I was in grade school, mom took me to the S&H green stamps store and that’s where I got a brand new baseball glove. She was a beauty!
I still have it and it’s worthless to everyone but me.

I was driving back then but i had not started usen SUNOCO till May of 64 with my NEW ride that i had got on the road . Before that all my gas was bought at a small fuel stop for trucks on the west side of the Village on old U S 224 , loved that place . When i first started driving i filled up where i worked as we had gas there all ya had to do was take slip put your name on it and how many gallons ya got and put the slip in the metal box next to the pump and 16.9 cents a gallon would be deducted from your pay on Friday . BUT SOME were NOT putting the slip in the box thinking NOBODY would Notice out of 10000 gallon , well somebody did and the program stopped . For the ones that did claim there gas we were NOW allowed to go to Gas Town and BUY under the company name and PAY CASH , the price was the same BUT when you paid CASH ya got TRUCKER DISCOUNT and that was three cents OFF pump price soo it was even BETTER . Then there was the FACT that the gas for the SEMI"S of days of OLD was HIGH TEST at 105 OCTANE on the truck side and that is what my 56 Ford rag top got fed into the 292 y block with the 312 blower heads and the dual bird cage four bbls and the ISKY 3/4 grind cam . Then came the 61 Ford Sunliner with the new hand built 390 F E block and she needed a wee bit more octane due to the 13.5 to 1 compression ratio and the new Crowler double roller cam with the 625 lift and now we stepped up to for normal; driving SUNOCO 260 at a slightly elevated price tag of 26.9 a gallon . i had built a wild 390 tri power , even if i had kept it all Ford parts for the tri power she was rated at 401 HP. and they ran vary well , mine ran a lot better . Back then LIFE was fun and affordable .

I remember when I was very young 3 attendants coming out. One filled the tank, one checked the oil, and one vacuumed out the floorboard. And maybe gave Mom a dish of some sort. Must have been a very competitive business at the time.

Before the oil crisis and self service gas, there was 5 gas stations here in a town of 550 people. Four of them did repairs too. The one that didn't, did tire repair. Now there's two gas station/convenience stores. Raymond at the Conoco station could put the nozzle in the tank, run around and wash the windshield and be back to flip the lever off on the pump at exactly a dollar's worth.

I’m sure in my early life I built a set of glasses from some service station while going to Ohio State in the 1970’s.

Before the oil crisis and self service gas, there was 5 gas stations here in a town of 550 people. Four of them did repairs too. The one that didn't, did tire repair. Now there's two gas station/convenience stores. Raymond at the Conoco station could put the nozzle in the tank, run around and wash the windshield and be back to flip the lever off on the pump at exactly a dollar's worth.

When i first started driving i was buying my gas at a little truck fuel stop and three guys worked there one stayed inside and took care of the sales and one guy out on the east pumps took care of the truckers where he pumped the fuel cleaned the windows mirrors and light thumped the tires and wrote the ticket and the guy on the west pumps did the same as this stop was set up like a horse shoe ya entered from the west side and if the east side was open ya drove around to that side they could do four trucks at a time on each side . NOBODY HOGGED the fuel island back then . If you wanted to get fuel then have a coffee then ya backed into one of the slots out back . I did not start with big company stations till 64 as i needed a little hotter gas and Sunoco was the only one that had it two grades above high test . And for that i either had to drive to the West side of Youngstown or go south 12 miles and i was usually down here anyway . Lot more Friendly foxes At the Sunoco they gave GREEN STAMPS and i gave them to my Mom. Back then five bucks went a long way at 26 cents a gallon and back then that left me with 28 cents in my pocket after one hour of work .

Never liked BEEEE PEEE it was hard on Ford HD gas truck engines The BORON with valve cleaner did a fantastic job on the 391 H D the 477 and 534 H D V 8 While at the Ford dealership i got saddled with the HD truck work as well i knew how to drive the big Fords and i knew diesels . One customer who ran a small fleet of Tandem and tri axle dump truck ran all fords and all gas powered and he ran SOHIO BORON gas as vary few of you know that in the days of the BIG gas jobs they required HIGH TEST gas or 105 octane , yep . Pulley started coming to this Ford dealer and well i got stuck working on his gas jobs 90% of the work was valve jobs and his N series all tri axles were 477 or 534 gas and they ate valves like M&M's his F series were all 391's . Every week one of them were in with burnt exhaust valves and you have never lived till ya stat pulling heads on a 477 or 534 in a N series by yourself . He came in to get one of the tri axles i was just finishen up on and we got talking and i asked him who's gas he was running and he told me BORON . I told him try changing to Gas town gas and see if this issue goes away and it did no more down trucks for burnt valves . BUSTEN your donkey it was a three day ordeal and with trucks it is not the price of the parts it is the DOWN time plus the parts and labor . Back then HD hourly flat rate was 10.50 and hour so ya had around 260 bucks labor rate but that truck lost a 400 dollar day time three . plus parts

Did his tail hang out from under the closed cover to the tank fill spigot????? I have seen pictures of such.
