Deere 3020 Gas wiring

I've been looking all over trying to find wiring diagrams for my 1966 Deere 3020 gasoline but everything I found is for either the diesel version or for a 24 volt to 12 volt mod and that looks nothing like what I see and I can't seem to find a reference for the gasoline version anywhere. Has a 48 loader on it.

I bought it used and there was a rat's nest built in under the dash that I had to clean up and it looked like a bunch of haphazard wiring.

It's got to turn key ignition and then a push button start on it. The light switch relay was pretty much trashed so I'm just going to install an aftermarket relay and LED lights on a single wire.

I'm probably going to have to run a new wire to the alternator and then some of the small starter wires.

For the short term I could care less about any of the dash lights or gauges. Not terribly confident they work anyway. I just need it to start and run. Thank you!

Welcome to the forums.

You likely will not find the correct wiring diagrams online for free or the service manual that has them in it.

I suggest you jump on eBay and purchase one of the pre-owned John Deere SM2038 Service Manuals. Ther are several there from about $50 to $100. JD wants $200 for a new one. The SM2038 is where you will find the wiring diagrams for Gas, LP, and diesel, along with other info you will need for other repairs. I would go with a good pre-owned copy before one of the electronic copy or a reprint.

If you don't have an Operator's Manual, you can download and save a copy from the link below. There are several choices based on serial number, so review and pick one with the group your serial number falls in.

John Deere Ag & Turf bookstore

Click on the Equipment Publications tab.

When that page opens enter 3020 in the box beside Model # and search. You should get a dropdown list of equipment with 3020 in the model #.

Click on 3020 in the dropdown list, that should open another list of just 3020 items. Look down the list to Tractors - Base Units.

You should get several choices of 3020 based on serial number ranges. Pick the one that best covers your serial number in the range shown.

When it opens the list of manuals you should see Operator's Manual and to the right of that it should show the Download icon. Click on Download icon and it will download a free copy of the Operator's Manual to your computer/device that you can save and print from as you wish.. If you want a book or CD of the Operator's Manual, the prices for those are shown below that, they are not free.

The service and parts manuals are available there as well, but those are purchase only items. You may find original used copies of the Service manual (SM2071) on eBay. Reprints are available from this site and may other places. A good used copy is often better than some reprints. Be aware online downloads may be incomplete.

Hello RD, welcome to YT! That is stock for a 1964 - ‘68 model. Side console models 1969-72 had the key switch with a start position. Mother Deere keeps pretty good tabs on their “printed manuals/tech literature so not a lot of free stuff floats around on the internet. Maybe someone will drop by with a pirated wiring diagram copy.

I just talked to the local dealer here and they emailed me a couple of wiring diagrams. They had a really hard time finding the part numbers and diagrams themselves and their system because of the age I guess.

It's dead in the middle of my driveway with a dead starter now and I'm trying to find an aftermarket replacement that can be shipped quickly to me since the Deere dealer can't get one in stock for over a week

Below is a link to the parts catalog (PC858 for serial numbers 122999 and below) that should be right for your 1966 which should have a serial number between 84000 and 97285, if it is a 1966.

To be clear are you looking for a replacement starter? If so, what did they give you for a part number(s) for the starter, please post them. Some numbers can be crossed at local parts stores. It was likely a Delco starter originally. It might be a starter some of us have replaced before and might have an aftermarket part number for.

Also post your serial number, if you would, so we can be sure we are looking at the right info.

If you take the starter out there should be a delco part number on it as well I believe NAPA should be able to help you out

I’d probably test it first by jumping the solenoid IN PARK

I was very confused by the wiring on my 1965 gas 4020 until I realized the wiring harness was the same as the diesel except for a few modifications. That is why the light switch connections are so interesting. There is an A & B circuit. I would try to get a starter larger than the stock one which I believe was a Delco HD 10 series. My gas 4020 has a Delco 20 series which will fit the HD 10 series head. There may be better options.
