Jubilee won't start

My 1953 Ford jubilee won't start unless I apply 12 volt power to the battery terminal on the starter. Then it will start and run. I've checked connections, I've replaceed the solenoid and coil. The tractor has electronic ignition so no points or condenser. When I push the starter button on the transmission cover, nothing, no sound or anything. I'm beginning to suspect the push button switch may be bad. Any suggestions or do you have an easy way to check the switch before I replace it? Thanks.

That is a neutral safety starter switch. The transmission shifter must be in neutral for the mechanical interlock to allow the starter switch to complete the circuit to ground. Try wiggling the shifter around near the neutral position while pushing the button to see if you can get the starter to engage. If not then it could be the switch or it could be something mechanical, like something being worn or not being in in the proper position. No matter the cause, you'll have to remove the transmission top cover to properly diagnose the problem and resolve the issue.

Make sure the tractor is in neutral. Try a jumper wire from the battery ground to the small stud on the solenoid and see if the starter engages. This will bypass the switch and wire from the switch. If the starter engages it is likely a switch or wire from the switch issue.

What is the brand and part number of the solenoid you used?

I will try the "wiggly" function and the work around for the ground wire.

Check the small terminal with a test light or voltmeter, it should have power all the time. The neutral switch provides the ground for the circuit.

If it is the right solenoid it gets power to the small terminal from one of the large terminals. That large terminal is the one the battery cable should hook to.I

If you use an ohmmeter you can check the small terminal to the solenoid mounting base. If it has continuity between them it is the wrong solenoid.
