Wanted 656 Utility Gas Engine

We are needing a good international 656 utility engine, mine is cracked block and not worth repairing, hoping to find a complete engine or good short block. Please Let us know if you have something or know where to find one, some of old international small combines used these engines possibly. Thanks

Any of the 6 cylinder gas engines will FIT , but you will have to use some pieces and part to make a row crop or combine engine work . Now as to finding a GOOD ONE that may take some doing due to the fact they all have had extensive field testing and been run hard and put away wet.

Bates is a few miles away from you in Bourbon. Assume you've tried them?

There are varying degrees of cracked blocks, some of the pinning systems can repair things you wouldn't believe. Discription and pics of cracks?

Your post made me curiuos about the pinning process so I watched a video. How effective is this repair and how wide of a crack can be realistically repaired ? I assume the answer to both depends on location somewhat ?

Thanks for your knowledge on these engines will check into it.

combines IH 403 and 615.. FYI, combine engines did not have sleeves, tractor engines did. I believe the front gear cover needs to be swapped onto the engine for side frame mount bolts.
Thanks, You definitely know what I should check into to make sure how much would have to be done to swap front cover. Thanks Again

Yes, has used bare block but no short block or complete engines, will have to decide how much labor and if all parts like crank and other parts are ok, so far just removed head and found crack. Thanks

I have a local mechanic that tore it down and found crack, he said it can be welded and put sleeve in then as I understand put a standard sleeve back in , only problem is $5-$6000 for all welding and repair and valve job and hope crank is ok may need ground, so I paid $5500 at a 4H auction then a few hours after got home found it was leaking antifreeze into #3 cyl. so if I put another 5-$6000 into it is going to be pretty expensive, may have to put clutch in while engine out, torque seemed to be ok, but will have to check it out also, it is a nice little tractor, so am going to have to decide whether to proceed or sell for parts tractor, has a nice loader in it also. Thanks to all who responded.

Ya never said where it was cracked . If you have a crack in the cylinder there is NO NEED of welding . That is B/S . A repair sleeve will solve the issue as i have done this type of repair god only knows how many times . I use a heavy wall repair sleeve , bore the block leave a step at the bottom then press the repair sleeve in with a interference fit cut and the extra length off deck the block rebore that sleeve press fit the org sleeve once the counter bore has been cut and stuff it back together and 4-5 K is again B/S Even with all machine work i am talking new kits , bearings , head work tear down and assembly should NOT cost over 3500 in todays market .

Tractor vet, have done this type of repair on several different engines over the years and the cost is not that bad. Beats the price of another engine that is used and may also have issues

I did a ton of automotive machine work starting way back in the early 60's . Where i first started working was a vary large construction company or should i say the man who owned it ran three company's , two out of where i worked and one on the western side of the state . At the main shop complex anything and everything was done in house . The onlyu thing we could not do in house was balance rotating members . We could weld up cranks and grind cranks up to a V 16 Bore engines from 1 1/2 inch up to 12 inches . deck blocks and head . During the dirt moving season when i turned 16 i was and operator or a field mechanic / welder and at 17 i was also one of the lowboy drivers . When winter set in and other then water line or sewer line work we worked in the shop doing what ever . i learned the trade from the OLD GUYS and built my first lets go fast engine out there . We worked on just about every engine of the time . One of the guys who worked for a company who rented one of the larger shop bay;s who rebuilt Detroits we became good friends as Dick had a passion for Fords like i did . Dick left them and opened up the Gulf gas station in town and that became Ford central and Dick started small with doing head work then into boring engines with a van norman portable bar . As he grew and left the station and built a small machine shop that kept on expanding and newer machine tools arrived I would send my boring work to him as i did not have a bar , i had a valve grinder and a old head surfacer that i could squeak a D 361 head in . Dick had the flywheel grinder and he had the latest and greatest line bore and new state of the art boring bar that was full automation . Sometimes when i would take sometimes up to him he would be swamped and say if ya need it done NOW you know where the machine is Do it . Loved doing the 361 and 407's on the line bore then do a center line .010 over bore . Dick could do the set up on the line bore faster then i could but hey he ran that line bore all the time . But as all things in life go he end with health issues . He tired slowing down but that did not work and was forced to close . He offered the whole operation to me but there was noway i could come up with that kind of money . I just did not have a quarter Mill layen around and my Friendly banker would have had a stroke if i went to him as he would turn pale when i needed fifty K for 90 days .
