    Should you decide to scrape, I suggest you post it here. Or, part it out until your sick of it. Then call the scrap guys. You have a lot off un-boltable parts. just a thought... wish you were closer

    p.s a year or 2 later I learned it was the mag coil that was no good replaced it and it's still running, 2, maybe 3 pulls on the crank

    EITHER LOCK - been there, done that. many years ago with my M, getting wood in cold weather. It would not start, really put the juice to it. Would not roll start, just skidded. Had 2 pistons lock up. Pulled the oil pan and tapped them loose from the underside with a axe handle and post mall...

    my 2 cents - don't limit your battery to one that will fit in the "as issued" battery box. you may find a lot more cold cranking amps come in a bigger package. Or try an 8 volt battery. It is common enough around here: upstate NY. Tractor supply has them about $80. Auto zone (next door)...

    Aleternator on a 300U

    I have a 6 volt alternator and it does not fit under, BUT the hood covers to keep weather out. There are lots of guys on here who can set you in the right direction.
