Ford 9N more hydraulic problems? Plus how to post for newbies.

I had the same lifting issue on my ‘39 9N many many moons ago. As I recall, I took out the pump and replaced one of the metal rings with a leather one. This solved the issue. Obviously not a professional rebuild but the kind of thing that one might do to fix a workhorse rather than a show...

    Ford 8n metal clanging sound

Or ratchet straps and a chain fall or come along… I’ve never been smart enough to do it this way but saw photos of it on this forum. Learn something every day. Chris from CLE

    Won’t run with new governor

First rule of troubleshooting is to change only one thing at a time. Since it as you stated “ran good” before changing the governor, you could have started there…. Now that several things have changed, your best bet is to do as all above have stated above and begin with the basics. Take a deep...

    8N bendix stuck

Look through the starter hole at the ring gear. Look for missing teeth. With plugs out you should be able to turn the motor from the front so that you can see all around. If you starter is still good, you can replace just the bendix. Easy job if you don’t accidentally extend it. If extended...

    My 1952 8N Story

The clutch was not depressed. I generally start it while standing at the left side of the tractor. I let it idle to warm up and smooth out a bit before mounting up. You are right about the clutch and transmission load. I disengage the PTO instead. Chris from CLE

    My 1952 8N Story

I hear you on the tranny fluid. At 3 degrees the Monday morning I needed to disengage the PTO in order for the starter to turn over fast enough to start. An ice cold 6V battery has only so much umph. Chris from CLE

Ford 9N has lost spark from a brand new distributor rebuild.

Kondoge, I guess that my original point was that some mechanical things are troublesome due to poor design (think early 80s Cadillac 4-6-8 engines or heat in a VW Beetle). These items in their original configuration will never be better. The front mount ignition setup is not one of those...

Ford 9N has lost spark from a brand new distributor rebuild.

Hey! Hey! It’s working again! So here is MS Copilot’s illustration of the front distributor mechanism on an 8N. Feel free to use as a resource while fixing your tractor. Rumors of the pending AI apocalypse may be overrated. Chris from CLE

Ford 9N has lost spark from a brand new distributor rebuild.

So I was going to share my opinion praising the simple mechanical design genius of the front distributor. I asked AI to generate a sketch that would illustrate my point. Turns out the AI generated sketch is way more interesting than any opinion I would share here. It was a crazy mash up of a...

    Should I install Petronix

Keep fixing it until it’s broke… Not sure from your post why you want to “get away from points.” If it starts and runs good you may just want to leave well enough alone. Chris from CLE

    Might be helpful

I use a spark plug sandblast cleaner. Absolutely the best tool I have bought. Saved me literally hundreds of dollars on new plugs and hundreds of hours chasing them down. I know I might sound like an internet schill but I really do like this tool. Chris from CLE PS. Like some others, I...
