    8N fan shroud

My 1949 8N does not have a fan shroud. Is this normal? Did all N series come from the factory with a shroud? Thanks.

    Generator, belt, pulley alignment.....what gives?

I did not try flipping the pulley over yet because if you eyeball down the pulleys/belt, it looks like the front of the generator is right inline with the water pump pulley leaving no room for a pulley. Maybe it's just really close. I'll find out on Monday when I get back to the tractor. Tim...

    8N stuck valve guides

Hook up your garden hose to a hot water spigot (like the one for your washing machine). Remove the coolant drain cock and hook up the other end of the hose. Turn on the hot water. Allow water to flow for a little while. Trick is to heat up the block so that the cylinder core expands &amp...

    Generator, belt, pulley alignment.....what gives?

I suspect my 8N has a wrong generator on it. The pulley alignment is off by a good 1/4". I don't think it's just a wrong pulley (on the right generator) because it looks like the edge of the belt would line up right with the front of the generator (with no room for a pulley). The crankshaft...

OT 1949 F1 Ford Manifold Repair

Don't know anything about this product, the people, the shop, etc. This is just a video I stumbled across recently. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyAykUm_Ykg No matter how you fix it, please keep us informed (and pictures). Thanks. PS: Don't know why the hyperlink isn't working...

    battery cables

Thanks. I have the terminals/cable/crimp die to make 1ga & 2/0 battery cables. I know 6 volt systems need heavy cables but I wasn't sure if 1ga would would be big enough or not. I'll use 2/0. Can't go wrong with bigger.

    battery cables

Simple question: What gauge battery cables did Ford put on 8N tractors? Thanks. Happy New Years.

    M-S carb ID

Long story short: When I bought my 8N (I think it's a 1949) it had a Chinese aftermarket carburetor on it. A short while later, I asked the seller if he still had the carburetor he removed. This is what he gave me. Before spending any more time or money on it, I wanted to know if it is the...

    M-S carb ID

Anybody know what model tractor this carburetor was originally on? There's no ID tag. Looks like it never had a tag. Thanks.

    8N not charging

Dug out the manual for my meter. It reads "Continuity is indicated when resistance is below 150 Ohms." Learn something new everyday. Thanks. Update: The fuse (for taking amp readings) in my meter blew about 25 years ago. Amazon will deliver new fuses this Friday, so I can't do a current draw...

    8N not charging

Thank you for the generator lessons. Past repairs have been limited to obvious bearing problems and/or worn commutator/brushes. Never had to dig deeper than that. Testing will commence on Tuesday.

    8N not charging

o the current test that I described What do you mean by "current test"? Do you mean "ohm test"? I understand connecting one or the other field lead to the housing as depending on where the "weak insulation" is, it will change the reading.

    8N not charging

Answers to your questions (in order I think): Connect volt meter to battery. Start engine. Increase to half throttle. No increase in voltage = not charging. Ammeter is just a decoration (a.k.a. it doesn't work). Past experience with my "local, trusty, starter/alt shop guy" haven' t been...

    8N not charging

No it's not. 6 volts works just fine on a whopping 120 CID, 6:1 compression engine. Besides the entire tractor is archaic. Based on your assessment, I should just junk it and get a new JD with 12 volts, live PTO, power steering, Diesel engine, etc. Not trying to be an ******* but nothing looks...
