    Have a mounted mower on my JD. M. I think it is a number 51. The bearings on the bottom jack shaft that has the pitmen drive on it are done.     Looks like the advise is to plain the head. So what is the best way to loosen the manifold bolts? The bolt heads are corroded bad enough that a six point socket slips. How much head to apply is safe before the manifold cracks. Would it be wise to grind the bolt head off, work the manifold...

    The head is off the JD M. There is a slight scoring ,3 thou, on the head and block where the gasket damage is. Should I put a film of JB weld in that area. To plain the head the manifold must be removed. The bolts are seriously corroded. Removing would be difficult.

    Thanks for the comments. More questions. Do I need to get the head planned at a machine shop and how tight to torque the head bolts? Thanks.

    My JD M was putting antifreeze in the crank case oil. After removing the head I find the head casket is distorted as you can see in the photos. What would cause this and what do I do to prevent this from happening again. Any advise would be welcome.

    I will likely leave this for a winter project. Would it be a good idea to drain all the fluids out of engine now.

    When checking the crank case dip stick, the oil level is rising. The oil colour is grayish. Does this indicate that anti freeze is getting in to the crank case? If so where would be the first place to check?

    M heat gauge

    Just put a new heat gauge in my 48 M. At a fast idle it holds at 205 degrees. Is this a good temp to be at??

    Well using used antifreeze from a diesel engine in an older gas engine cause problems.

    Thanks for the info. Flushed 5 galons of varsol and diesel through it with an air gun with a liquid pickup. Didnt come completly clean but much better. Another question; When I put oil in the fan bearing housing , it ran out just as fast. Does this mean the bearing and/or seals are shot...

    Not much surfer smell but is black and thick. Is this stuff better left there or do I need to get it out?

    [ Thanks that info does help. Filled the trans with diesel and ran in thrid gear for 5 minites three times. then removed the trans cover. The sludge still hasnt flushed out. Does fluid from the trans and diff cases get down into the final drives?

    I am cleaning up a 1948 M that has sat in the shed for 25ish years. The inside of the transmission housing is lined with black slim that does not wash out with a diesel fuel flush. There is a port on the back wall that goes into the diff housing, so likely the same slim is in there too...
