    Oil Leak - John Deere 48 A

I recently noticed that I am having some oil leaking from the petcocks on my 1948 John Deere A when it is running (petcocks are closed). The oil is leaking as a slow drip from each petcock. The tractor is not smoking and seems to be running well aside from the leaks. I mentioned the issue to...

1948 John Deere A Ignition Switch

I have a 1948 John Deere A and I am in the process of re-wiring the tractor. I don't think my 1948 A (Serial Number 610465) came with an ignition switch? If that is correct, then my grandfather probably installed a switch when they changed to a distributor from the magneto. I broke a terminal...

    John Deere 1948 A Starter

I posted several weeks ago about my issues trying to start my 1948 John Deere A. I pulled the starter off the tractor and took the switch off. I jumped directly from a charged battery to the brass stud underneath the switch (negative) and the starter case where it bolts to the tractor frame...

    1948 A Starter

Thanks for the clarification. If I do a bench test and it spins I at least know that the switch was bad because it will not spin now mounted on the tractor. Thanks, Doug

    1948 A Starter

Thanks. I will do that. Just so I am clear, wouldn't the negative go to the stud under the starter switch and the positive go to the starter case since this tractor has a positive ground? Thanks, Doug

    1948 A Starter

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I really appreciate the collective knowledge of this group. The battery positive is grounded to the main frame just below the battery box. I replaced that cable and ground the spot on the frame down to shiny metal before re-attaching. Good point about...

    1948 A Starter

I posted earlier about starting issues with my 1948 John Deere A. I replaced both battery cables, pulled the started and cleaned all connections to the starter switch itself. The starter weakly turned over for maybe 30 seconds then ultimately stopped. I also thought I heard a little popping...

    1948 A Starting Issue

I will check all these things out. The positive from the battery is grounded to the outside of the battery box near the seat platform, so I will definitely look to move that ground to a bolt closer to the starter itself. Thanks for all the help, Doug

I will replace cables first and check all those connections. This forum is really helpful and I appreciate all your knowledge.

    1948 A Starting Issue

I am having trouble getting my John Deere 1948 A to start. The starter is turning the engine over very, very, slowly for a few minutes before the battery dies. I might depress the starter pedal for about 15-20 seconds per attempt. I replaced the battery a few years ago (12 volt battery) and...

    1966 Farmall 656 - Whereabouts

Thanks for all the information from everyone. I will post on the Red Power forum for sure. I called the auction company and they only keep records for 7 years and I also spoke to the dealership where the tractor was first bought, but the dealership changed hands and they do not have those...

    1966 Farmall 656 - Whereabouts

I am trying to locate my grandfather's 1966 Farmall 656. This was the first tractor I was ever allowed to drive by myself and would love to find it again. The serial number is 24295. The tractor is a narrow front with a gas engine. The last known location that I am aware of was when it was...

Type of Oil For 1948 John Deere Model A

I was looking for recommendations on the best engine oil to use in a 1948 John Deere Model A. I was told when I got the tractor to use non-detergent SAE 30 oil, which I have been using for the past 7 years. With all the new synthetic and semi-synthetic blend oils on the market, is there...
