    Hi All, I have a frost free hydrant that needs just the head replaced. My question is: The pivot connector is badly rusted to the operating rod. If I shut the water off and unscrew the head will the operating rod pull out of the tube? I dont want to dig it up. Thanks

    It would be easier with a picture, I could get a shot tomorrow but on the front of the engine you will find a large nut (Page 112 of the I&T shop manual) Nothing is attached to it. Unscrew the nut and take the spring and plunger out and replace with a new one. Takes five minutes.

    Hopefully here are pictures of the old oil plunger I just replaced. I just wanted to make sure this flat spot on the side was normal. Sorry about the pictures it was the best I could do.

    The new one didn't have a flat spot where the old one did. It was slightly off the top on the side worn shiny. I couldn't look in the hole, do you think it may have had some company in there? Now I wish I got a mirror and flashlight out and looked in there!

    I happen to get mine from external_link. You have to order the parts separately. I would get the oil plunger, spring and gasket. Its about a 5 minute job and for me worth every penny. I was on that site before this one, I believe this site has the same parts.

    It fit OK but was shaped funny. It wasn't round on the inside, it was scalloped.

    I'll say, easy too. When I took the old plunger and spring out I noticed a flat spot on the old plunger and the end of the spring was broken. It sure was worth it.
