    Oil leak

Checked out the oil relief valve and everything looked good with no blockage. Put everything back together and the same problem exists. Oil was really pouring out of the filter and I think way too much for it to just be a bad gasket. Also, when I opened up the filter it was filled with oil...

    Oil leak

Thank you very much for the ideas. I will work on them first thing in the morning and let you know how it goes.

    Oil leak

1948 front mount 8N. Started it up for the first time in a few weeks and the pressure gauge pinned at 60 and I started getting a very significant leak of oil coming out the top of the oil filter. Fair amount of smoke out the exhaust as well. My first thought is that there is a blockage...

    help with carburetor ID

Thanks, that helps a lot. It looks like the same rebuild kit works for a bunch of the zenith's so the one I ordered should work. Thanks again for the quick help!

    help with carburetor ID

I have a 1974 2000 3 cyl gas. Getting poor gas flow out of the carb bottom after a couple minutes running but good going into it so I'm thinking it's time for a cleaning and maybe a rebuild. Tried the gentle tapping with a hammer handle and that doesn't help so I don't think it's just a stuck...

    8N starting problem

Finally got back to the little bugger after picking up a new rebuilt in the USA starter from NAPA. When trying to take off the old one I only got the outside housing off because, as several of you said, the little puppy was locked up tight. I rocked it in 4th and it wouldn't budge, but it came...

    8N starting problem

put in a new gate and culvert today (thank god for having two tractors!) so it took me awhile to get back to the 8N. Don't think I have a big enough vise for a bench test, but I did try the 4th gear rock and it is locked up - about 4-5" of play back and forth and that's it. So does that...

    8N starting problem

negative to the lug on top of the starter, and the positive to the nut that the positive from the battery attaches to. I'll try it again to the clutch pedal. what do you mean by "bench test"?

    8N starting problem

Just back from NAPA and the battery is fine under load. Since the starter wouldn't jump start either I didn't think that was it but now I'm sure. Unless someone has another idea I'm thinking I just got a lemon starter right out of the box. Irritating, but not the end of the world.

    8N starting problem

thanks Bruce and Soundguy. I charged the battery two weeks ago since I hadn't run the tractor for awhile and noticed it was low on water in one of the cells. But now that you bring that up I guess I took it for granted that the battery was fine since it fired up so well the first time, so I...

    8N starting problem

Late 1948 front mount 8N, original 6v ignition system. was running fine, and when i went to restart it after lunch I got a small click the first time i tried to start it and then no sound at all on subsequent tries. Assumed it was probably the selonid or starter. checked all the connections...

    2000 steering column leak

T thanks hobo, you do make it look easy - will take me 3 times as long (if I'm lucky) but i'll get it done.

    2000 steering column leak

Thanks Ultradog - I used to multi-task when deer hunting as well - read all of Ayn Rand one year. :) This sounds like a problem I can deal with so thanks to all for all the help. And now that I know 3-cyl vs. 4-cyl is analogous to front mount vs. side mount I'll make sure I note that in the...

    2000 steering column leak

I've had an 8N for years, but just got a 2000 and today I started to get a major leak of fluid from the top of the steering column. I'll dig out the manual tonight, but in the meantime, is there some common problem that would cause this? I assume it's related to the power steering, of which I...
