    I have a 494 and a 71. I think your 246 will work by using a round cell corn plate. If you go slow you can maintain 3/4- 1" depth. I do it in the early spring with sweet corn. I wish you well !!

    Also check that the springs on the dogs, top and bottom are working freely. If they don't operate freely, the hay in the chamber will push back.
