JD Combine Engine From a 1085

Thanks very much Tim. Any idea what might need to be modified? Trying to weigh up the pros / cons of fitting this engine vs overhauling existing 404.

JD Combine Engine From a 1085

Thanks for the reply. The 4620 engine is pretty good, burns no oil and has 40 - 45PSI oil pressure. I'm sure it is re-buildable. Injectors & pump are new. It does have some blow by & is hard to start so suspect it needs pistons / rings & maybe a head rebuild.

    4620 thermostart

Just seen this post now. Yes the three thermostarts work well, I have done it on a 4620 but you will need three as there is no way to make it work with just one, because of the intercooler

JD Combine Engine From a 1085

Does anyone know if the 6.404 engine from a 1085 combine (like the one below) would fit a 4620 tractor? Untitled URL Link

    Thank you, TimS

Tim S has helped me on these forums a lot since 2010, I bought a 4620 from Canada & everyone said it was a "crazy" idea for a young guy with no experience of those tractors. Tim talked me thru a major pain of a job recently & he is one of the most helpful folks I've met & knows his stuff :-)

    4620 steering valve leak

just wanted to update you guys, think I am sorted, this is due to the help you provided and especially Tim S who was never too busy to take calls or respond to emails and man does he know his stuff with these steering valves! reckon 18/19 in Jims diagram is what caused the problem originally...

    4620 steering valve leak

you are spot on Tim & thanks to the other posters too. I had a valve seal kit here and replaced the seals (parts key no.9 X 2) at the top of the shaft and it has stopped the oil but I didn't let the engine run for long as I could see the seals were starting to come under pressure & would blow...

    4620 steering valve leak

thanks Jim, I had a look while ago (valve is still on tractor) and removed steering sheel & found parts key no.9 is pinched.. is it wishful thinking to just try replacing this and see if it stops the leak?

    4620 steering valve leak

Would it be possible to replace this seal without a test bench ?

    4620 steering valve leak

    4620 steering valve leak

hoping Tim S or TX Jim might have an idea on this? It could be an O-ring or worse, cracked housing... didnt even look under dash cowl yet but removed steering wheel and hand throttle assembly and oil pouring out the top with the engine running? If I need to ship the valve to you Tim then I'm...

    4620 steering valve leak

4620 sprung a hyd oil leak when I started it today, I may have had the engine revs too high when backing off the manual de stroke screw on pump!? It's leaking near the hand throttle between the steering wheel & the valve itself .. Any ideas? It's a reman valve sourced in USA about three...

    4620 Hydraulic Leak

4620 developed a high pressure leak / blowout last night, I am tryin to figure out exactly which pipe is leaking but it looks like a rubber pipe around 1" diameter passing behind dash / cowl close to back of ignition switch and seems to be going into the top cover underneath the cab floor, any...

    4620 Hydraulic Standby PSI

thanks Jim, ive been through that priority valve a couple of years back by may need to go back in again! I tried the guage in a remote of a modern tractor and its only reading around 1000Psi so think it must be faulty

    4620 Hydraulic Standby PSI

have a Q for the folks here re standby PSI, i had set it to 2400 a couple of years back and checked again this morning as noticed SCV's / Remotes seem weak, i have also recently done some work on rockshaft valve, had to remove it to get cam back on follower. the steering / brakes are fine...
