Closest ag tractor to JD 401C

I recently bought a JD 401c and would like to buy a service manual for it. I thought I would start with a $32 one and if thats not enough buy the JD manual for $200. The lower cost manuals do not list the 401c so I need to know what tractor this is a varient of if any? Thanks

    Gears grinding

I alway thought a clutch slipped more as it wore. Is that not the case with these, do they drag as they reach the end of their life? Or am I miss interpeting "maxed out"? The clutch seems to work fine once it is in gear.

    Gears grinding

The tractor will not start in gear there is a lock out. the hi lo has to be in neutral to start. The fellow I bought the tractor from says it never ground like that before and he seems quite honest (don't they all) I was wondering since he lost a lot of oil from the power steering unit and that...

    Gears grinding

I recently bought a 1979 JD 401c. it has an 8 speed trany with a hyd reverser. as you shift between gears it has a tendency to grind. this is worse in the high range than the low. the clutch seems fine but near the top for engagement. it will stall the tractor if I lock the brakes and engage the...

    Disaster or no big deal?

The tractor is a JD 401c with power steering. The ps valve assemble has been removed because it was leaking, I believe I can get a replacement part for this. The issue is that there is a small piece missing from the casting that the assemble casing bolts to. the piece missing is about the size...

    PS housing leaking on 401C

I read somewhere (on this forum) that the 401c is the industrial version of the 3020. If that is the case would the steering assemble from a 3020 be a replacement for the one in the 401c? Where would I find one that fits? Thanks

    PS housing leaking on 401C

I am going to look at a JD 401C this weekend. the fellow says the power steering housing is leaking. he has taken it off and tried to have it fixed but it now leaks in another spot. also he says there is a tear drop shaped piece missing from the casting right below the ps housing but the housing...
