    Yet another serial number question

If the forum members are not too tired of answering serial number questions, here's another. My serial number in the usual place is missing. No hint of any number in that location. Must have been ground off or it's a replacement engine. It does have a plate that is riveted on found below...

    #1 piston on TDC

I'm thinking I put my crankshaft in 180 degrees off so I won't be able to see the stationary mark when it's TDC. I'll have to try the straw or balloon method. Thanks for your quick feedback Bob. It is really appreciated.

    #1 piston on TDC

Y Thanks Bob. Sorry it's an 8N. I know about the timing mark on the fly wheel but I forgot to check that when I reassembled the engine. I'm afraid I'm 180 degrees off?????

    Lock nuts on piston rods

After reading many responses I'll be reusing the olds nuts but use them with locktite. I can't find locally and all the 8N Tractor suppliers seem to be out of them. Would you guys trust they will stay in place? Thanks for everyones response. I really appreciate it.

    seal retainer

just so I'm sure I'm making myself clear. I'm talking about using a sealer to seal the retainer to the block before putting the rope seal in the groves. I'm not saying put a sealer under the rope. Clear as mud? Thanks again

it is necessary to apply gasket sealer to the rear seal retainer before installing in the block? This is the retainer that the rope seal goes into. Thanks guys.
